Just to be clear, we’re not including conventional weaponry, or items presented exclusively to help you kill foes.

#10- Ocarina “The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time” (1998)

Kicking of our list is this iconic magical musical instrument. Passed down for generations by the royal family of Hyrule,
this treasured heirloom plays songs with beneficial results. Primarily, it is capable of opening the door of time. However, it’s also used for a myriad of other purposes, including solving puzzles, changing the time of day, and quickly warping you around the map.

#9- A.R.I. Glassess “Heavy Rain” (2010)

In a game that forces you to carry out detective work to piece things together, the real star here is this experimental FBI evidence-gathering device worn by investigator Norman Jayden. Consisting of shades and a single glove, Ari can accumulate massive data at crime scenes. Creating the sense that you are playing with a shiny new expensive toy within a game, it’s data and virtual realities are simply mind-blowing.

#8- Omni-Tool “Mass Effect” series (2007- 2012)

In a game filled with hostile aliens in deep space, there’s nothing more important than this orange holographic gauntlet. Another futuristic computer, it also records a myriad of information, while scanning environments and aliens. A versatile tool, as the name suggests, it can also hack computers, decrypt codes, and perform repairs. It’s kind of like a glowing digital Swiss army knife.

#7- Detective Vision “Batman Arkham” series (2009-)

Now it’s time for the greatest tool used by the world’s greatest detective. This gadget was extremely overpowered in Arkham Aslyum and made less of a crutch in the sequel, while remaining one of our favorites. While the Cryptographic Sequencer was awesome for breaking codes and tracking signals, it’s all about X-ray vision, the power to see through walls and access threats at a moments notice. That’s right, I’m Batman!

#6- Pip-Boy 3000 “Fallout” series (2008)

In this post apocalyptic world of the far future, nothing is as helpful as one of these personal information processors. During your travels and many encounters with mutated hostiles, it does everything from keep track of damage taken, ammo available, while serving as a Geiger counter. It also keeps track of dialog and audio files. Sure the PDA pretty much serves as your heads up display, but we love it.

#5- Nanosuit “Crysis” series (2007 - 2013)

While the hardcore would be quick to praise Samus’ Power Suit, this one took everything up several notches. Also known as a Nano-Muscle Suit, this powerful armor puts it’s wearer on equal physical footing as the Ceph alien invaders, having been reverse engineered from their tech. It’s artificial muscle fibers can be used for a variety of purposes, including hardening to absorb damage, invisibility, and super human movements.

#4- The Animus “Assassin’s Creed” series (2007-)

While this one isn’t portable like the others on the list, it’s one heck of a gadget that gives Desmond Miles the ability to relive the lives of his ancestors. A holodeck for the mind powered by genetic information, it serves as a McGuffin that makes it possible to go back and explore compelling time periods and struggles while searching for clues to end an ancient conflict.

#3- Grappling Gun “Just Cause” series (2006 - 2010)

Okay, back to gadgets of the handheld variety. This one is self-explanatory! This magnetic harpoon tool comes in shape of a gun, as well as the forearm-mounted variety. This RPG franchise is all about catching them all. As a trainer on a quest to become the best, this tool is of central importance. The trainer can carry several balls at a time, and they come in many strength varieties.

#1- The Portal Gun “Portal” series (2007- 2011)

Taking the top spot on our list is the gun shaped tool that fires two connecting portals. Admit it, you want one of these babies if only to prank others or avoid having to walk anywhere.
