Top 10 Times Actors Threw Shade at Each Other

Welcome to MsMojo, and today we’re counting down our picks for the Top 10 Times Actors Threw Shades at Each Other

For this list, we’ll be looking at the biggest feuds and harshest words exchanged between actors.

Do you take sides in any of these feuds? Let us know in the comments!

#10: Anthony Daniels & Kenny Baker

One of the most entertaining parts of the “Star Wars” films is the relationship between uptight droid C-3PO and his beeping sidekick, R2-D2. But it seems their actors didn’t feel much camaraderie. Artoo actor Kenny Baker referred to Daniels as “the rudest man [he’d] ever met” and discussed how unfriendly he was on set. Daniels, meanwhile, was dismissive of the acting talents of Baker, saying that the character of R2-D2 “might as well be a bucket.” When Baker passed away, Daniels’ memorial tweet seemed to be more about how fans would be grieving, rather than his own sadness. If these two ever got along, it was a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.

#9: Julia Roberts & Nick Nolte

Julia Roberts starred in numerous successful and beloved films in the early 90s. However, one that’s been deservedly forgotten is “I Love Trouble,” a lackluster romantic comedy starring her and Nick Nolte. There’s no chemistry between the two stars, who couldn’t even successfully pretend they liked each other. Roberts and Nolte reportedly clashed so much on set, they opted to use stand-ins rather than act opposite one another. Roberts referred to Nolte as “completely disgusting.” Nolte fired back, saying that Roberts was “not a nice person.” Is it any surprise the two haven’t worked together since?

#8: Bella Thorne & Whoopi Goldberg

After a hacker stole sensitive photos and reportedly threatened to leak them, Bella Thorne posted the pictures on Twitter to spoil the perpetrator’s scheme. While many were supportive of Thorne and her refusal to be victimized, another actress wasn’t quite so supportive. On “The View,” host Whoopi Goldberg criticized Thorne’s decision, not only of sharing the photos but also of taking them in the first place. These comments were seen by many as victim-blaming, including Thorne. In a series of emotional videos, Thorne chastised Goldberg for her remarks and announced she would not be appearing on the show as scheduled.

#7: Will Smith & Janet Hubert

“The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” has one of the most beloved casts of any 90s show. However, one key character was played by two different people. Janet Hubert, who played Vivian Banks in the show’s first three seasons, reportedly clashed with Will Smith. She alleges Smith was arrogant and referred to him as an “egomaniac.” After Hubert left the show, Smith argued that Hubert held a grudge against him for his success at a young age. While Hubert had dismissed the idea of a reunion, one did happen in 2020. Smith and Hubert made amends on camera, and things between the two seem to be patched up. There’s nothing like a fresh start!

#6: Shannen Doherty & Alyssa Milano

The Halliwell sisters encountered numerous conflicts on “Charmed.” But the one that got the most attention was the one going on behind the scenes. Star Shannen Doherty, who left after the third season, criticized both the show’s quality and suggested she didn’t think too highly of her co-stars. In an interview with “Entertainment Tonight,” Doherty said she wanted “to work with actors who really, really care.” While it’s unclear who these comments were directed at specifically, “Charmed” star Alyssa Milano offered her thoughts on Doherty’s words, saying she sounded “really angry.” The two are reportedly on better terms now, with Milano referring to her and Doherty’s relationship as “cordial.”

#5: Kim Cattrall & Sarah Jessica Parker

Kim Cattrall’s absence from “Sex and the City” sequel series “And Just Like That…” wasn’t much of a surprise. The tension between her and co-star Sarah Jessica Parker was more or less an open secret by then. While claims of a feud were denied, Cattrall later told Piers Morgan she thought Parker “could've been nicer." Later, after Cattrall's brother passed away, she made a post calling out Parker for reaching out, saying she was “not [her] friend.” Parker has acknowledged Cattrall’s comments. But she’s dismissed efforts to label the relationship as a “catfight.” Don’t expect the return of Samantha Jones anytime soon.

#4: William Shatner & George Takei

On the original “Star Trek” series, Captain Kirk was loved and respected by his crew. However, it seems that didn’t reflect how things were in reality. Kirk actor William Shatner was notorious for not getting along with his co-stars, both during the show’s production and after it ended. Among his biggest adversaries was George Takei, who played Sulu. Takei has referred to Shatner as "not a team player" and claimed that he was hostile to him on the "Trek" set. After Takei had allegedly declined to invite Shatner to his wedding in 2008, Shatner claimed Takei was dealing with a "psychosis." Takei responded he had, in fact, invited Shatner. The feud has continued as recently as 2021. Some things don't fade away with time.

#3: Dwayne Johnson & Vin Diesel

After Dwayne Johnson joined the “Fast & Furious” franchise, the series reached a new level of action-movie dominance. But the tensions between him and co-star Vin Diesel reportedly weren’t just on-camera ones. During production of "The Fate of the Furious," Johnson made a now-deleted Instagram post, alleging that some of his male co-stars weren't a pleasure to work with. Diesel later claimed any conflict between the two was due to “tough love,” which Johnson dismissed. Though Johnson has since left the series, Diesel has publicly pleaded with him to return for the upcoming finale. Johnson called Diesel's plea "manipulation." It must take a lot to soften “The Rock.”

#2: Joan Crawford & Bette Davis

If there’s a show made about the conflict between two actresses, it’s bound to have been nasty. While the first season of “Feud” mainly focused on the making of “What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?,” tensions between Joan Crawford and Bette Davis went back decades. There’s enough drama here for a whole list, with Crawford getting married to an actor Davis had fallen for, and Davis playing a faded movie star seen as a thinly-veiled portrayal of Crawford. Numerous vicious remarks were said by the actresses about each other. Crawford said Davis had a “cult” while she had “fans.” Davis, meanwhile, said her best experience with Crawford was pushing her down the stairs for a scene. Can you imagine the two of them on Twitter?

#1: Olivia de Havilland & Joan Fontaine

Siblings often fight. But it rarely gets publicized like this. Olivia de Havilland and Joan Fontaine were both two of the most renowned actresses of their generation, as well as sisters. The animosity between the two reportedly stemmed all the way back to their childhood and stayed frosty for decades. Fontaine tried to congratulate her sister for winning her first Oscar and was reportedly given the cold shoulder. Fontaine also alleges she was kept from seeing their dying mother and that she wasn't invited to attend her memorial service. Even death didn’t help this feud subside. In 2016, nearly three years after her sister’s passing, de Havilland said she still referred to her as “Dragon Lady.”
