For this list, we’ll be looking at, and listening to, some of the most irritating voices used by big screen characters. Their actors don’t necessarily have annoying voices, though some of them do; but that’s a list all on its own.
#10: The Garbage Pail Kids
With a name like that, is it any wonder these little gremlins are annoying? Adapted from a trading card series to parody the Cabbage Patch Kids, the Garbage Pail Kids are the polar opposite of their cutesy counterparts in that they’re gross, ugly, and utterly obnoxious. Each one individually has a gimmicky and annoying voice. However, because all of them annoy, none of them really stands out as being worse than the others; which kind of blunts their overall impact. While they can purportedly “do anything by working with each other,” one thing they can’t do is make us love the sounds of their voices.
#9: Napoleon Dynamite
While we’re on the subject of eponymous characters with annoying voices, Napoleon Dynamite is the titular teenage protagonist of this film, whose distinct, breathy voice can be quite grating. Aimless and contrary by nature, Napoleon spends most of the movie making bizarre and insanely quotable remarks, in between long, vacant expressions. While Napoleon’s behavior and voice do have a strange charisma to them for some, those who don’t get the appeal often find this famed dork’s voice, and those who imitate it, unbearable to listen to.
#8: Skids & Mudflap
Skids and Mudflap are Autobot twins who argue constantly in their whiny voices. Worse, they’re extremely racist caricatures of black stereotypes. For the record, there’s nothing inherently annoying about Ebonics if that’s how you talk – it’s people who affect the dialect that are annoying, and there’s something especially offensive about two alien robots choosing to appropriate it, and racist stereotypes, for themselves; particularly since these two transforming twits have more screen time during this film than most of the other Transformers. There are plenty of other Transformers in this film series with annoying or offensive voices, but few of them are as prominent as Skids and Mudflap.
#7: Igor Peabody
Okay, we know we’re not picking on actor’s voices specifically, but Gilbert Gottfried’s signature voice (which isn’t his natural one, by the way) is absolutely ear grating. While it can be fun in small doses, his turn as Igor Peabody is far from small; appearing in all three “Problem Child” films. A shrill-voiced, abrasive adoption agent, turned principal, turned dentist, Peabody is an opportunistic and greedy man whose nemesis is the titular obnoxious orphaned boy, Junior. Their conflict with each other is absolute murder on the eardrums.
#6: Lina Lamont
The transition from silent to talking films was rough on some actors, and few people epitomize this better than fictional actress Lina Lamont. Although her beauty makes her appear like a perfect leading lady in silent films, Lamont’s high-pitched, annoying voice is unsuited to being heard; both by audiences in the movie and for those watching it, to the point where the studio tries to prevent her from being heard by the public. Lamont’s voice, along with her self-centered, spiteful attitude, and dim-wittedness, make her a very exasperating character indeed.
#5: Nicky
While Adam Sandler has quite a few annoying voices in his catalogue of film roles, such as Jill of “Jack and Jill,” his crown jewel of annoyance is undoubtedly his turn as the character that gives “Little Nicky” its name. One might expect that a character who is literally the son of the devil to have an irritating voice, but Nicky’s is the result of an injury, which gives him a speech impediment. Again, speech impediments are fine, but hearing a guy known for annoying vocal tics attempt to portray one for comedic purposes is insufferable.
#4: Ruby Rhod
What do you know – the future still has loudmouthed radio personalities. Ruby Rhod is a fast-talking and extremely flamboyant radio host that gets caught up in the violent conflict over the Fifth Element. Ruby’s high-pitched voice, rapid-fire delivery, and tendency to scream when in danger make him quite annoying to have along for the ride. Given how much danger he gets put in, this can prove very distracting from the action; especially since he never shuts up and carries on with his broadcast despite the extreme circumstances.
#3: Woody Woodpecker
Cartoon characters usually have some kind of gimmick or design component to help them stick out from the rest. As it turns out, Woody’s most memorable aspect is his annoyingly distinctive laugh. This red-feathered bird’s normal speaking voice is not exactly dulcet either, being heavily nasal, yet also high-pitched. Despite how annoying many find his voice, though, Woody and his voice clearly have their proponents, since the character has remained a part of pop culture for over 70 years. Clearly, Woody will be pecking away at people’s ears for years to come.
#2: Pee-wee Herman
While this goofy man-child may have attained fame on the small screen, he and his annoying voice appeared on film first. Pee-wee Herman is practically a boy in a man’s body, and that description also encompasses a fondness for silly, often annoying, voices. Pee-wee vacillates between several voice styles, usually using a squeaky, effeminate one, which is at odds with his distinctive, honking laugh and the deeper voice he uses when he gets mad. Love him or hate him, Pee-wee’s definitely a memorable character, though, and it’s unlikely he’d be quite so well known if not for his voice.

Jar Jar, as well as the rest of his species, the Gungans, have a very irritating speech pattern filled with spoonerisms and other nonsense, which, combined with Jar Jar’s grating voice, makes listening to him rather torturous. The fact that he’s a major character in the “Star Wars” prequels, particularly the first, is a gigantic factor in many fans’ dislike of them.
