Top 10 Marvel Movie Characters You Didn't Know Were From the Comics

They may not have had much time onscreen, but when it comes to the page these characters each have quite a story to tell. Welcome to Watchmojo.com and today we'll be counting down our picks for the Top 10 Marvel Movie Characters You Didn't Know Were From the Comics.

For this list we'll be looking at characters from Marvel movies who may have seemed like throwaway or newly created characters, but who actually debuted in the pages of Marvel comics.

#10: Angel Dust
Gina Carano's super-strong baddie might have been a burly, bad tempered brawler on-screen, but on the page she's a bit more layered. In the comics, Angel Dust is one of the more human-looking members of The Morlocks, a group of reclusive mutants who live in the Chicago sewer system due to fear of rejection by society. For her film appearance, Angel Dust has permanent super-strength and invulnerability, but her comics counterpart is able to give herself short bursts of strength by briefly increasing her adrenaline levels. Not a bad power, she just needs the occasional nap afterwards.

#9: Aldrich Killian
In his film appearance, Aldrich Killian is the charismatic, driven leader of the AIM Corporation and a major thorn in Tony Stark's side. His comic book counterpart, however, is a bit less glamorous. In the comics, Killian is still the inventor of Extremis, a compound that grants its user various superpowers. But instead of using his creation to engineer a profitable conflict like in the movies, the comics Killian was wracked with guilt after selling his creation to some very unsavoury people, and took his own life in his very first scene. And unlike most comic book characters who shuffle off this mortal coil, poor Killian hasn't been seen since.

#8: Jasper Sitwell
You may remember this SHIELD agent as one of several movie characters revealed to be a member of the villainous HYDRA organization, before his untimely demise at the hands of an eighteen-wheeler. But Sitwell's been a loyal SHIELD agent in the comics since the 1960s. Sitwell was once brainwashed by HYDRA in the comics, but he was deprogrammed and re-joined SHIELD, only to eventually die protecting Nick Fury. Don't worry though; Sitwell came back as a friendly zombie working for SHIELD's paranormal division, STAKE. Let it never be said that SHIELD discriminates against the undead.

#7: Doc Samson
Betty Ross's new boyfriend from The Incredible Hulk may not seem like much of an imposing figure on the big screen, but in the comics he's one of the Jade Giant's strongest allies. A dose of gamma rays gave the Hulk's psychiatrist super strength, which was initially dependent on the length of his newly green hair in a nod to his biblical namesake. But his powers eventually stabilized, meaning he could cut his luscious locks and still be able to bench-press a city block. He kept the look anyway, because if you've got it, flaunt it. If anyone needs a psychiatrist this tough, it's the Hulk.

#6: Jarvis
Tony Stark's loyal AI companion is a bit less digital in the comics, a flesh-and-blood butler who's served Iron Man and the Avengers since the beginning. But appropriately enough for someone expected to do laundry and serve tea for the Earth's Mightiest Superheroes, Edwin Jarvis is no pushover. Jarvis served in the Royal Air Force during World War 2, during which time he was also the RAF's champion boxer. Since his time with the Avengers, he's also received extra combat training under Captain America himself. When he's not keeping Avengers Mansion tidy, Jarvis frequently visits his mother, and once fought a New York bully nicknamed Bruiser to defend her neighborhood.

#5: Justin Hammer
You don't get to be as successful a businessman as Tony Star without making a few enemies. One of Shellhead's most frequent nemeses, rival industrialist Justin Hammer can often be found secretly equipping Tony's foes with high-tech equipment, just like Sam Rockwell did when he played the character onscreen. But Hammer's done far more than help Mickey Rourke build a few drones and show off his wicked dance moves. He once managed to frame Iron Man for the murder of the Carnelian Ambassador by causing Iron Man's repulsor ray to fire. With enemies like these, who needs friends?

#4: Sakaaran Natives
This insectoid race are one of several sentient species native to the planet Sakaar, a world that eventually came under the rule of The Incredible Hulk. In Guardians of the Galaxy, they serve as minions and enforcers for the villainous Ronan, including one maskless Sakaaran Native portrayed by the film's director, James Gunn. In the comics, The Hulk made an ally of a Sakaaran Native named Miek, who became a member of Hulk's band of “Warbound”, who fought to liberate the planet from a cruel Sakaraan Imperials. Look out for Miek and the other Warbound in Thor: Ragnarok.

#3: The Collector
Benicio Del Toro may not look it, but his character from Guardians of the Galaxy is one of the oldest beings in the Marvel universe! We don't know much about the origins of The Collector's onscreen version, but in the comics the enigmatic figure is one of the Elders of the Universe, the oldest living beings in the known universe. In order to keep immortality interesting, they've each chosen a hobby to occupy their time. As you may have guessed from his name, The Collector's is collecting things. Species, objects, just about anything he can get his very old hands on. Suddenly the size of your comic collection doesn't seem so bad.

#2: Weasel
For a guy like Deadpool, the words “friend” and “victim” often go hand in hand. This is truer than ever when it comes to his best pal Weasel. Once upon a time, Weasel was Jack Hammer, a student at Empire State University alongside the likes of Peter Parker. But after a time traveling Deadpool got Jack kicked out of school, he turned to a life of crime, adopted a new moniker, and put his hacking and inventing skills to nefarious use. Frequently supplying Deadpool with weapons and intel, he's been the Merc with a Mouth's closest ally... even if their friendship makes Weasel's life as unpleasant as possible.

#1: Cosmo the Space Dog
You may recall this spacesuit wearing Golden Retriever as a part of the Collector's menagerie, but he's more than just a pet. In the comics, Cosmo is a Soviet Space Program test animal whose rocket went off course, sending the poor animal drifting into space. Eventually, Cosmo arrived at the space station Knowhere, having gained sentience and psychic powers along the way. Using these gifts, Cosmo became the Chief of Security for Knowwhere, often acting as a liaison between the station's inhabitants and the Guardians of the Galaxy. He's one of the Guardians' most faithful allies, with the exception of Rocket. Did you expect a dog and a raccoon to get along?
