Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we’re looking at the rare and epic scenes involving Legendary Pokémon throughout the anime and the movies.
#10: Nebby’s Potential
“Revealing the Stuff of Legend!”
In the forest, Ash and Pikachu find a sleeping Cosmog, a light, infantile legendary Pokémon left behind by the four Guardian Deities. Ash promised in a dream to take care of Cosmog, and he keeps his promise by taking Cosmog with him. The little cloud is nicknamed “Nebby” and eventually evolves into Cosmoem under Ash's care. When in a crisis, Ash appears before the four Deities and they perform a ritual to unlock Nebby’s full power, as it evolves into Solgaleo, the cosmic lion legendary of Alola. Nebby was Ash’s very first Legendary, and in a way, it reflects his own growth – starting out small before finding its full potential as a powerhouse.
#9: Entei vs. Charizard
"Pokémon 3: The Movie" (2000)
Created by a flock of Unown, Entei acts as the protector of a lonely little girl named Molly. Unfortunately, its methods for making her happy are extremely misguided –like kidnapping Ash’s mother, Delia. Of course, trying to confront Entei head-on is insane, but thankfully, an old friend arrives to give Ash a hand – his Charizard. The two fire types are neck-and-neck, throwing fiery blasts back and forth from the air and the land. The clash ends with Charizard pinned by Entei, the Volcano Pokemon ready to snap its opponent’s neck. Thankfully, Molly rushes in to stop the fighting, but it makes us shudder to think how close to death Charizard was that day.
#8: Arceus’ Fury
"Pokémon: Arceus and the Jewel of Life" (2009)
Thousands of years ago, Arceus –the god-like Pokémon- was betrayed by humans, and vowed vengeance when it next awakened. Eventually, it made good on its promise, its awakening triggering the events of "The Rise of Darkrai" and "Giratina and the Sky Warrior". Thus, during its rampage, Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina arrive to try and cool Arceus' fury. Unfortunately, even three mythical dragons are no match for the might of a god. They throw everything they have at it, and yet it barely even reacts, instead tossing the three dragons around with almost no effort. Thankfully, the trio manages to buy our heroes time to fix everything, even though they’ll be sore in the morning after a legendary beatdown.
#7: Tobias’ OP Victory
“The Semi-Final Frontier!”
Let’s be honest, a few of us have tried to win the Pokémon league with a legendary at least once. Ash gets a sample of this as he faces a trainer named Tobias in the Sinnoh League. Right out the gate, Tobias sends out a Darkrai that decimates most of Ash’s team, only to finally be slain by Sceptile. But just when you think the rest of the match will be smooth sailing, surprise! Tobias brings out a Latios that obliterates the last of Ash’s lineup. In the end, Tobias is crowned the champion, having squashed Ash with two legendaries, which makes us wonder what other Pokémon he had up his sleeve.
#6: Pagogo
“The Wonders of the World!”
When she was a child, Liko was given a mysterious pendant by her grandmother –but it turns out to be more than just a pretty gem. In reality, the heirloom is the dormant form of Terapagos, an ancient Pokémon previously belonging to Liko’s great-great-grandparents, Lucius and Rystal. While a curious little terrapin, it took a liking to Liko and did everything it could to protect her. Eventually, Liko offered Terapagos a chance to be captured, and it happily jumped at the chance, earning the nickname Pagogo in honor of its previous trainers. It’s a rarity for a main character in the anime to capture a Legendary, only made possible by an unbreakable bond.
#5: Charizard Dominates Articuno
“The Symbol Life”
Ash’s journey through the Battle Frontier has officially begun, and his first match pits him against Noland of the Battle Factory. The Frontier Brain had befriended an Articuno, the legendary ice bird, and sent it out as Ash’s opponent. But our hero came prepared as well with the almighty Charizard in his corner. Despite its type disadvantage, Articuno puts Charizard through the wringer with its speed and agility. The match is too close for comfort, but one good seismic toss is all Charizard needs to secure victory for its trainer. Only a few can square up with a Legendary and come out on top, but we expect nothing less from one of Ash’s most iconic Pokémon.
#4: Elemental Throwdown
“The Scuffle of Legends”
In ancient times, Groudon and Kyogre clashed in a never-ending rivalry. Years later, Ash and friends find themselves caught in the middle of these titans’ conflict thanks to the meddling from Team Aqua and Magma. Both teams are controlling their respective Legendaries with the Red and Blue Orbs, and Pikachu is possessed by the Blue Orb, forcing it to assist Groudon in the scuffle. After Groudon lands a devastating blow, the Orbs leave their hosts, freeing the Pokémon from their control, and Kyogre rescues Ash and Pikachu from drowning. Despite their ancient past, both Legendaries part as equals, finally free of the Orbs that made them puppets for Aqua and Magma’s schemes.
#3: ‘Bianca’ Kisses Ash
"Pokémon Heroes" (2002)
During his adventure in Alto Mare, Ash meets the brother and sister legendaries, Latios and Latias. Throughout the film, Latias seems particularly friendly with Ash and is shown to be able to shapeshift into a copy of her human friend, Bianca. In the final scene, what looks like Bianca comes to say goodbye to Ash... and gives him a goodbye kiss. Many have wondered whether it was really Bianca or Latias in her human disguise. It’s pretty ambiguous, but given that this girl was seen without the real Bianca’s white beret, it's safe to assume that Ash got a literal legendary kiss. Apparently, Ash has a way with Latias, as he befriends another later in the show.
#2: Mewtwo’s Awakening
"Pokémon: The First Movie" (1998)
Using DNA from the mythical Mew, a group of Team Rocket scientists successfully cloned one of the world’s most powerful psychic Pokémon – Mewtwo. However, Mewtwo became frustrated over not knowing its true destiny and how these humans viewed it as just an experiment. It lashed out, its psychic powers on full display as it devastated the lab with a mere thought and flick of the wrist. In the end, the lab was reduced to a burning crater, with all the scientists lost in the destruction. This massacre was merely a prelude to Mewtwo’s ultimate revenge plot until its rage can be quelled.
#1: Ho-Oh’s Hopeful Encounters
“Pokémon - I Choose You!”
After a fierce battle with a flock of Spearow, Ash and Pikachu have finally settled their differences and become friends. At that moment, Ash sees an enormous, majestic bird Pokémon flying in the sky. We know it now as the legendary Ho-Oh, but no data on the bird could be found at the time, confirming just how vast and unknown the Pokémon world is. Additionally, legends claim that Ho-Oh abandoned humanity due to its many sins. It appearing for Ash must mean that it sees potential in the young trainer that he has yet to find himself, and this wouldn’t be the last time that Ash encountered this majestic titan.
