#10: Feraligatr
The final evolved form of the playful Totodile, Feraligatr is one tough customer. Preferring to hunt on all fours while on land, Feraligatr’s powerful hind legs grant it impressive agility when hunting prey or fighting strong opponents. Along with its powerful jaws which it uses to terrify and rip apart its prey, Feraligatr has impressive attack and defensive stats and can learn a variety of powerful physical moves such as Ice Fang, Thrash and Superpower. Feraligatr also possesses an advantage over other starter Pokémon, as it can reach its final evolutionary form much faster than the rest at level 30.
#9: Lapras
Inspired by the mythical Loch Ness monster, Lapras is known for its docile and gentle nature, and for ferrying people and Pokémon across the sea. Formerly driven to near extinction by poachers, protection efforts and love for this Pokémon allowed for its population to grow in abundance. During the Orange Island saga. Lapras proved itself an invaluable member of Ash’s team before returning it to its herd. Along with its enchanting melodies, Lapras is highly intelligent, being able to understand human speech and in some rare cases can even use telepathy. As of the eighth generation, Lapras became one of the few Pokémon with the power to Gigantamax, giving it a major boost in both size and power.
#8: Slowbro
Don’t let its dopey appearance fool you or this Pokémon will show you a world of hurt. One of the evolved forms of Slowpoke that occurs when a Shellder bites its tail, Slowbro are mostly peaceful and tend to avoid confrontation. When forced into a battle, Slowbro quickly demonstrates that despite its dimwitted and forgetful nature, it is not to be underestimated. While it may not win in a contest of speed, Slowbro makes up for this with its powerful psychic abilities and strong defense. While the design of it’s mega evolution leaves something to be desired, Mega Slowbro is nonetheless formidable due to having one of the highest base defense stats in the franchise.
#7: Swampert
As one of the most popular starter Pokémon, it’s only natural that Mudkip’s final form would be a major powerhouse. Along with having enough physical strength to smash giant boulders and drag large ships, Swampert is also part Ground-type, which makes it immune to Electric-types. Effectively giving it an advantage over other Water-type Pokémon. A natural born threat on its own, Swampert became even more formidable thanks to Mega Evolution. Sporting a bulkier appearance complete with a boost to its attack and defense, Mega Swampert is able to overcome its slow speed thanks to its Swift Swim ability, which doubles its speed in the rain. Whether on land or sea, this Pokémon reigns supreme.
#6: Psyduck
He may not be the most powerful Water-type, but Misty’s Psyduck is an iconic figure in the Pokémon franchise. While Psyduck’s absent minded nature is often a source of ire for Misty, he manages to stand out compared to the rest of her Pokémon and often surprises her in the most unlikely ways. While not much of a fighter, Psyduck does possess immense latent potential that emerges whenever he gets a headache. When Psyduck’s mental pains reach their peak, he responds by unleashing powerful bursts of psychic energy, capable of overpowering Pokémon that are normally much stronger than him.
#5: Vaporeon
One of Eevee’s three original evolutions from the first generation, Vaporeon stands out from its other forms thanks to its physical traits which allow it to survive on both land and underwater. Sporting a majestic mermaid-like appearance, Vaporeon is also known for its unique cell structure, which allows it to camouflage itself by literally melting into water. Along with possessing the highest base HP stat of all the Eeveelutions, Vaporeon possesses high special attack and special defense and is immune to water-types thanks to its Water Absorb ability. From battles to contests, Vaporeon is an ideal water-type for any trainer to have on their team.
#4: Kyogre
Water-types don’t get more dangerous or more powerful than this beast. Known in the Pokémon universe as the creator of the world’s oceans, Kyogre is a member of the Weather Trio whose abilities allow it to control water, and by extension the weather. After undergoing the process of Primal Reversion, Kyogre’s abilities are amplified to god-like levels. In its primal form, Kyogre possesses the highest special attack, special defense and overall base stat total of all water-types, along with gaining the ability to fly. When it comes face to face with its rival Groudon, this almighty Leviathan becomes violent, causing natural disasters of biblical proportions.
#3: Gyarados
It’s hard to imagine that this giant sea serpent evolves from a useless Magikarp. Praised and feared for its high attack power, Gyarados is a popular Pokémon among experienced trainers including gym leaders, champions and even leaders of criminal organizations. With scales stronger than steel, powerful fangs, as well as the ability to breathe fire and destructive beams, Gyarados’ rage is unparalleled. Thanks to Mega Evolution, Gyarados’ destructive power is further amplified, granting it physical attack power that surpasses all Water-types!
#2: Blastoise
As the final evolved form of the original Water-type starter, Blastoise has acquired quite the reputation in the fandom. Sacrificing speed for power and defense, Blastoise’s main strengths are its powerful shell and the hydro cannons on its back which fire jets of water strong enough to blast through steel, as well as allow Blastoise to perform devastating high-speed tackles. With its power and reputation continuing to grow with every generation, Blastoise has acquired plenty of boosts including a Mega Evolution, as well as a Gigantamax form. Regardless of how much time passes, Blastoise remains a constant favorite among both new and old fans alike.

Along with having the highest speed-stat of all fully evolved starters, Greninja is also the only Pokémon that transforms via the bond phenomenon, into an alternate form known as Ash-Greninja. In this form, Greninja experiences a massive boost to its attack and speed stats, and also amplifies the power of its signature move Water Shuriken.
