Top 10 Easter Eggs in Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair

Welcome to MsMojo, and today we’re counting down our picks for the easter eggs and call-backs in the “Malcolm in the Middle” revival. If you haven’t yet watched it, there will be spoilers ahead.

#10: Minty Mints

If you’ve just about banished the “Minty Mint” jingle from your brain, here it comes bouncing right back. You’re welcome. In the original series, Malcolm finds himself smitten with a girl whose intellectual wavelength is, let’s say, a few stations away from his own. Desperate to connect with her, he borrows a classic Reese move, and it works. Perhaps a little too well. Anyway, “Minty Mints” themselves are still alive and well, and if you look really closely, you can even spot them on grocery store shelves in the revival. Just in time to make sure that jingle sets up shop in your brain for good!

#9: Herbie, Is That You?

If you’re the youngest in your family, you already know the bittersweet reality of hand-me-downs, and this family is no different. Sharp-eyed fans might spot a familiar face tucked away in Kelly’s room: the iconic plushie from Season 1’s “Cheerleader.” Dewey’s obsession starts with a harmless TV ad, then spirals fast as the toy’s sugary voice flips into a tiny mob boss, rambling about hidden cash and ominous consequences if he doesn’t take it home. Maybe Kelly inherited that same imaginative streak to claim the toy as their own. And while you’re scanning the room for Easter eggs, keep an eye out for nods to Cynthia, too. You remember Cynthia, right?

#8: “L Stands for Value”

Say “L Stands For Value” to any “Malcolm in the Middle” fan, and you’ll instantly spot the real ones. This is a fantastic visual gag from Lois’s days at Lucky Aide, where we all know the “L” really should’ve stood for “Low Budget,” but we digress. In this season, Lois is swept up in the stress of planning her and Hal’s 40th anniversary, leaving her Lucky Aide days in the rearview mirror. However, she has brought a little piece of it home, as you can see on the fridge. A reminder that whether it’s 2006 or 2026, the struggle to stretch a dollar never really goes out of style.

#7: Check Out Those Posters

The revival doesn’t just reunite the core clan; it’s a veritable homecoming for some of the show’s supporting players, many of whom make their way to the big anniversary party. But even those who don’t appear in the flesh still leave their mark. Take Jessica, for example: the babysitter-turned-master-manipulator who could out-Lois Lois herself. While Leah faces off with a particularly pesky classmate, eagle-eyed fans will spot a familiar face peering out from the posters on the wall. That wild mane is unmistakable. It’s too bad she couldn’t make it in person, but we like to imagine she’s off living her best life in France.

#6: The Mr. Waffles Mascot

Remember that time Reese joined the army to deal with his broken heart after his girlfriend dumped him for Malcolm. Of course, it doesn’t take him long to bail, and it turns out he’s not exactly built for desert life. Well, not without a pep talk from Mr. Waffles first. Turns out there’s a lot Reese will suffer through for a decent breakfast, especially one with 20% more blueberries in every box. Now, we don’t think we’re hallucinating when we say that we spotted good ol’ Mr. Waffles at the grocery store. Maybe the world is finally ready for Mrs. Waffles to have her moment, too!

#5: Monkey Butler at Your Service

Let’s talk about the Monkey Butler, the one that proves capuchins aren’t always nature’s little helpers and easily one of the most unhinged sitcom subplots ever aired. This capuchin essentially turns Craig’s home into a fortress of simian chaos. By the time Hal bursts in to rescue his friend, the whole thing has spiraled into something that feels part sitcom, part psychological thriller, and part fever dream. It’s hilarious, but there’s also something slightly unsettling about this whole plot. In the revival, if you look closely, you might even spot a poster that feels like a nod to this storyline. Did someone pitch it as horror movie inspiration? We wouldn’t be surprised.

#4: Connie the Bowling Ball

Malcolm is a genius who excels at many things. On that note, when it comes to bowling, he throws an excellent gutter ball. His humiliation reaches its peak when Lois suggests he use a lighter lime green ball, with “Connie” engraved on it, typically reserved for children. Even with Connie’s help, Malcolm’s performance is a spectacular disaster and one of his most memorable comedic meltdowns. Fast forward to the present, and there’s Connie, proudly displayed among the family’s garage treasures. It’s certainly an interesting keepsake: a trophy commemorating one of Malcolm’s most epic fails. Some families keep medals; this family keeps reminders that, yes, life really is unfair.

#3: Roller Skates

Cast your mind back to season one, when Malcolm decides it’s finally time to get roller skating lessons from Hal to boost his street hockey skills. Hal has plenty of unexpected talents across the series, but this one might be the most … colorful. His teaching style is… unique, but it works. Two decades on, it seems Hal has quite literally hung up his skates, now displayed in the garage like a badge of honor. You can even spot them during Francis and Piama’s, erm, let’s call it trip to “Funky Town.” Are the skates officially retired, or does Hal still sneak in the occasional solo skate session?

#2: Brush Up Your Latin

In the original series, the phrase “Life is unfair,” famously belted out in the opening theme song “Boss of Me” by They Might Be Giants, pretty much sums up the entire show. It’s basically a musical lens through which the characters see the world. Fast forward 20 years and a whole new generation later, and yeah, life is still playing by the same rules. In fact, they even seem to be teaching that in Leah’s fancy private school. Take a closer look at the school crest and, if your Latin’s up to scratch, you’ll spot the motto “Vitta Iniquum.” And yes, it translates to exactly what you think: life’s unfair.

#1: Welcome Home Bernard!

Bernard the hamster is the stuff of “Malcolm in the Middle” legend, a humble class pet who became the star of one of the show’s most beloved running gags. When Dewey finds out Bernard’s next caretaker is a total jerk, he pulls off an epic rescue. Bernard keeps reappearing in the background throughout the season, ending with a surprise cameo in Alaska in the season’s finale. In the revival, Bernard makes a triumphant return, rolling into Hal and Lois’s anniversary party just after the glitter explosion. Even with Frankie Muniz’s real-life family in attendance, Bernard steals the spotlight. After all, no party is complete without the show’s most unexpected VIP.
