Top 10 Cartoon Couples No One Saw Coming

Welcome to MsMojo, and today were looking at some of the most unexpected cartoon love stories on TV. Theyre not necessarily the ones involving unrequited love, but mostly pairings that surprised us. Expect major spoilers.

#10: Filburt Shellbach & Dr. Paula Hutchison

Rocko's Modern Life (1993-96)

Originally, Filburt was meant to be a secondary character to add to the modern insanity of Rockos life. Little did fans suspect that not only would he become a main character, but he would also find love. Dr. Hutchison is a perky cat of many medical professions, known for her toothy grin. For a hypochondriac like Filburt, Hutch is the perfect match, and the two end up married with four children by the end of the show. Many will say that cats and turtles dont mix, and yet the love between these two proves them wrong. In addition, were pleasantly surprised by how much development this relationship has received.

#9: Louise Belcher & Regular Sized Rudy

Bob's Burgers (2011-)

While Louise is shown crushing on popstar Boo Boo, there is one boy she has a natural chemistry with Regular Sized Rudy. Rudy is an asthmatic, socially awkward boy, and yet hes able to keep up with Louises chaotic nature and even talk her down at times. In turn, Louise shows a genuine concern for Rudys safety and doesnt use him as much as she uses others. Her being protective of Rudy is surprisingly wholesome, but what really shocked us is how she kissed and slapped him on Valentines Day a rare show of affection from her. It might be just because she hates Rudys crush, Chloe, or maybe there really is something more between these two.

#8: Sam & Dakota Milton

Total Drama: Revenge of the Island (2012)

A gamer nerd and a fame-hungry rich girl an unlikely pair if ever there was one. Despite their clear differences, Sam and Dakota slowly bond over time. Dakota even gives Sam her number right before hes eliminated. Then things REALLY take a turn when Dakota gets mutated into the Dakotazoid thanks again, Chris. Sam isnt afraid of Dakotas new form... quite the opposite, he thinks it makes her even better. While Total Drama romances can be pretty messy, this pairing is honestly very heartwarming. Both are able to look past their external flaws to find true love in the most unexpected places. If only all of this shows couples could be this inspirational.

#7: Daffy Duck & Tina Russo

The Looney Tunes Show (2011-13)

To balance out Bugs and Lolas zanier romance, we have a pairing that shouldnt work as well as it does. We all know Daffy Duck as a screwy narcissist, and in this show, its given a more modern twist. Tina is a rebellious, snarky tomboy who takes no nonsense from anyone. And yet, their relationship is surprisingly wholesome. Tina loves Daffy despite his many, MANY flaws, and has enough patience to put up with his antics. Meanwhile, Daffy actually cares for someone besides himself, even trying to support her when he can. This pairing is so unexpected that Daffy even calls Tina insane for loving him. It's hard to argue with that, honestly.

#6: Marceline & Princess Bubblegum

Adventure Time (2010-18)

At the very start of the series, it looked like Finn the Human and Princess Bubblegum were meant to be. However, as the show progressed, we sensed something between Bubblegum and... Marceline the Vampire Queen? While it wasnt outright stated, fans speculated that they were romantically involved, but it didnt end happily. These theories were ultimately confirmed in the finale when the two shared a kiss. Not only was it satisfying seeing this theory confirmed, but it was also heartwarming to watch the two rekindle their relationship over the course of the show. The only other couple that surprised us this much was Jake and Lady Rainicorn mostly because of how wholesomely unhinged they are.

#5: Kif Kroker & Amy Wong

Futurama (1999-2003; 2008-13; 2023-)

Obviously, were rooting for Fry and Leelas ongoing love story, but theres another connection on the show that catches our attention. Amy is a bubbly, outgoing party girl from Mars, while Kif is a shy Amphibiosan with literally no backbone. Two polar opposites, and yet they have an adorable chemistry. While they still have their falling outs and breakups, they bring out a new side to each other. Kif gains more confidence over time, while Amy slowly grows more mature along the way, to the point where she willingly wants to raise a family with him. The fact that Amy overlooked his slimy exterior is already a promising start.

#4: Luna Loud & Sam Sharp

The Loud House (2016-)

Throughout the episode "L Is for Love," Luna has been trying to find the confidence to ask out Sam, the person of her dreams. Sams identity is purposely left vague throughout the episode until the very end, when we learn that Sam is another girl. Suffice it to say, Lunas confidence is well-rewarded as the two are confirmed to be dating down the line. Luna and Sam have their occasional falling outs, but they care for each other enough to work past their issues and remain a loving, literally rocking power couple.

#3: Kim Possible & Ron Stoppable

Kim Possible (2002-07)

Kim is our titular butt-kicking freelance hero, while Ron is the laid-back sidekick who cant hold onto his pants. Despite their differences, these two have been best friends since preschool, with fun and natural chemistry. There were subtle hints that they may actually like each other, but no one expected them to follow up on these feelings during Junior Prom, where they finally kissed. Even the rest of the school was shocked to see Kim and Ron become an item. Thankfully for us, they held onto their chemistry, and it became even more heartwarming... except they barely get a chance to kiss without being interrupted.

#2: Abigail Lincoln (Numbuh 5) & Hoagie Gilligan Jr. (Numbuh 2)

Codename: Kids Next Door (2002-08)

(They say NumBUH instead of NumBER in the show, but it still sounds the same) Numbuh 5 is the calm, cool, and collected second-in-command, while Numbuh 2 is the dorky, jokey tech expert of Sector V. Theyre usually paired up on missions and have such a fun chemistry Numbuh 2 cracking his dumb jokes while Numbuh 5 says what most of us are thinking. Fans speculated on them getting together, but it seemed implausible until the series finale. During the interviews with the grown-up Sector V, it was confirmed that Hoagie and Abby eventually tied the knot as husband and wife. It's nice to know that despite his groan-worthy puns, Hoagie managed to win Abby over in the end, once again cementing that opposites really do attract.

Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.

Gumball Watterson & Penny Fitzgerald, The Amazing World of Gumball (2011-)

Gumball Helped Penny Literally Come Out of Her Shell

Hoss Delgado & Eris, The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy (2003-07)

A Dimwitted Paranormal Hunter & the Goddess of Chaos... A Match Made in Heaven

Jimmy Neutron & Cindy Vortex, The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius (2002-06)

They Constantly Shift from Classroom Rivals to Unexpected Lovers

Beast Boy & Raven, Teen Titans (2003-06)

While They Dont Officially Hook Up, Its Hard to Ignore the Chemistry

Mordecai & Stef, Regular Show (2010-17)

After So Many Failed Relationships, Who Expected Mordecai to Find Love?

#1: Korra & Asami Sato

The Legend of Korra (2012-14)

Korra and Asami had a rocky start as rivals for Makos affection. But over time, they became like sisters. They emotionally supported each other even when the love triangle got messy. And even after, Asami stood by Korras side when she was at her lowest. The series' final scene caught our attention as the two leave on vacation together, and the sequel comics confirmed that the two were meant to be. Before The Loud House, same-sex couples on Nickelodeon seemed implausible. But "The Legend of Korra changed all the rules thanks to some subtle hints and an iconic final shot, opening the door for more representation on the network.
