Top 10 Best Moments In Stranger Things Season 5

Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we’re counting down our picks for the top 10 goose-bumps inducing and unforgettable moments in “Stranger Things” season 5. Beware of Spoilers!

#10: Vecna Gets His Children

“Chapter Four: Sorcerer”

Being the villain doesn’t stop Vecna from sending chills down our spines or sparking a strange sense of admiration. Nearly the entire first half of season 5 had us awaiting his arrival—and when he finally did, it was magnificent. The Hawkins crew thought they could smuggle away the children Vecna needed to reshape the world, but they grossly underestimated him. After the Demorgogons tore through Hawkins, Vecna emerged and proved just how badass he is. As he revealed his plans to Will, he hunted down every child. Tunnel, bus or basement—it didn’t matter, he took all of them. This sequence is a brutal reminder of Vecna’s powers and why he’s the show’s perfect villain. His design, his presence and aura? Everything!

#9: Jonathan & Nancy's Confessions

"Chapter Six: Escape from Camazotz"

It’s incredible what being at the brink of death can make you do. Nancy has just shot the exotic matter, leaving her and Jonathan trapped in a room full of melting paint-like substance. With no way out and death staring them in the face, they choose honesty. This decision is exceptionally great since their relationship has been weighed by tension since the start of season 5. But at this point, it all spills. What they hate about their relationship, their secrets and things they’ve been afraid to say. Jonathan then tops it off with an un-proposal, one that makes them realize they’re not ready for the next big step. What makes this moment exceptionally beautiful is how clear it is that these two love each other, without holding each other back. It’s scenes like this that remind us why we love “Stranger Things” so much.

#8: Hop's Attempt to Sacrifice Himself

“Chapter Four: Sorcerer”

With Hopper’s heartbreaking story about his daughter, it’s easy to understand why he protects El so fiercely. In season 5, that instinct reaches a devastating peak. When all hope seems lost, El discovers the explosives strapped beneath Hop’s vest and realizes the noble decision he’s made. That moment hits hard, especially as she begs him not to do it. But Hop is resolute, willing to sacrifice himself to stop Vecna and save his adopted daughter. As he steps away, reminding El how much he loves her, we’re emotionally wrecked. The pain deepens with a clip of his daughter’s final moments. Thankfully, instead of mourning another fan-favorite, Hopper re-emerges alive with a shocking new revelation. No more fake-outs, Hop!

#7: Holly & Max's Escape from Camatzoz

"Chapter Five: Shock Jock"

Don’t we just love the Wheelers? Holly proves she’s every bit as smart and tough as them as she relentlessly searches for a way out of Henry’s mental prison. After discovering Henry’s traumatic past, the two finally find their escape. Just as Kate Bush’s song kicks in, Max sees her path to the real world. The problem? Holly can’t follow the same route. What follows is a beautiful, powerful exchange as Max helps Holly realize she’s been “Holly the Heroic” all along. That belief changes everything at that moment. As the song crescendoes, both girls race to their separate exits. It’s such a heartwarming moment. Things become even more beautiful with Max and Lucas finally having their long-awaited reunion. Let’s not forget, none of this would’ve been possible without yet another heroic deed from Mrs. Wheeler.

#6: Dustin Breaks Down

"Chapter Six: Escape from Camazotz"

Dustin and Steve’s bromance has always been one of the most beautiful relationships in “Stranger Things”. But in season 5, something just feels off. The banter is gone, replaced by a tension that explodes when they reach the abandoned lab, even leading to a full-blown fight. But everything changes the moment Steve decides to play the hero and save Nancy and Jonathan. Faced with the possibility of losing a friend the same way he lost Eddie, Dustin breaks down. It’s a devastating moment that shows just how deep Eddie’s loss still cuts—and how much Steve truly means to Dustin. We honestly couldn’t hold back tears as Dustin admits he can’t survive that kind of loss again.

#5: Max Is Back

“Chapter Three: The Turnbow Trap”

After Max’s encounter with Vecna in Season 4, her fate is left hanging in the balance. Season 5 reveals she’s still in a coma, which isn’t the outcome we were hoping for. But hold up…something uplifting is on the way. After Holly is taken to the Creel house, a mysterious letter summons her into the woods. As she’s being chased by an unseen figure, it feels like something horrific is about to happen. Then boom… we’re hit with that beautiful revelation. Max is alive, at least in some form, just trapped inside Henry’s memories. She hasn’t returned to her friends yet, but that reunion with Holly tells us everything we need to know. Victory isn’t just possible, it’s definitely coming.

#4: Will Unlocks His Powers

“Chapter Four: Sorcerer”

That final battle between Vecna, his army, the Wolf Pack and the Hawkins gang is undeniably epic. But the biggest payoff comes with Will unlocking his powers. For seasons we’ve watched Will suffer, sidelined and often treated as the weakest link. So when he stops being the victim and becomes Will the Wise…Will the Powerful, it feels earned. This transformation comes right after Vecna’s cruel and dehumanizing speech about how Will broke easily. Defeated and pushed to the edge, Will goes full Avatar mode. With solid white eyes, he snaps and kills every Demogorgon threatening his friends. It’s a breathtaking sequence—the perfect payoff for Will’s journey and definitely worth revisiting over and over again.

#3: Karen Wheeler Fights a Demogorgon

“Chapter two: the vanishing of Holly Wheeler”

It takes more than courage to face a creature as terrifying as a Demogorgon. For Karen Wheeler, it’s a mixture of fierce maternal instinct and a little liquid courage that pushes her into action. Vecna has set his eyes on Holly and a Demo finally comes to collect her. Holly escapes to the bathroom and finds her mom, who doesn’t believe her at first until she sees the blood. What follows is a real struggle for survival as the Demo stalks them through the house. Then comes that awe-inspiring moment. With the Demo blocking their path, Karen goes full mama bear. Glass shard in hand, she steps between the monster and her child, fearless and unyielding. It's brave, desperate—and nearly costs her life.

#2: Will Takes Vecna by Surprise

"Chapter Five: Shock Jock"

Vecna underestimated Will. Honestly we all did—until he proved he was not just a weak vessel. When Max is at the brink of being strangled by Vecna, Will steps up again. Pushed by his mom and driven by sheer willpower, he taps into the hive mind and turns Vecna’s power against him. In a stunning reversal, Will not only saves Max from certain death, he actually manages to injure the almighty Vecna. It’s a defining moment—one that shows how far Will has come. Who would’ve thought he’d one day stand up to the monster who tortured him for so long? Seriously, it’s pure satisfaction watching Will flip the script on Vecna.

#1: The Ultimate Battle

"Chapter Eight: The Rightside Up"

It’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for. The Hawkins gang ascends into the Abyss to confront Vecna, and the Mind Flayer soon springs to life. Right on cue, Eleven arrives, setting off a jaw-dropping showdown between two formidable forces. But taking Vecna down isn’t a solo mission. Everyone must play a part, and Nancy makes the bold choice to act as bait. From there, it’s pure chaos. The group unleashes all they have on the Mind Flayer while El goes head-to-head with Vecna. Just when it seems she has him pinned, his veiny hand lashes out. But not on Will’s watch. Turning Vecna’s power against him, this allows Eleven to drive his body through a spire. Now, that’s the true power of teamwork!
