Top 10 Adorable Movie Sidekicks

When it comes to sidekicks, the cuter the better! Welcome to MsMojo, and today we’ll be counting down our picks for the Top 10 Adorable Movie Sidekicks.

For this list, we’ll be taking a look at the cutest sidekicks in cinematic history! However, we’ll be excluding sidekicks from Disney and Pixar films as that already has its own list… and you should definitely check it out!

#10: Milo

“The Mask” (1994)

Kicking off our list is Milo, a Jack Russell Terrier who does a bang up job of keeping his owner, hapless bank teller Stanley Ipkiss, in high spirits. Whereas his role in the film’s first two acts is relatively small, Milo steps up in a big way near the end, helping Stanley to defeat evil mobster Dorian Tyrell and his band of thugs. Milo is the sort of dog you just want to hold close and never let go; he’s endlessly adorable but struts around with enough spunk to let you know that if the going gets tough, you can count on him! Just make sure you don’t leave him alone with any magical masks…

#9: Donkey

“Shrek” franchise (2001-)

We could probably devote an entire video to the exploits of this Eddie Murphy-voiced character. While he may not be the cutest sidekick in terms of looks, he definitely makes up for it with his boundless charisma and plucky resourcefulness. Donkey has all the qualities of an awesome sidekick. He offers motivation to the hero when he’s feeling down; he’s a bottomless pit of comic relief and he can find a silver lining in even the darkest of situations. Donkey is the kind of sidekick we’d want by our side if we ever ended up in a world populated by fairy tale creatures!

#8: Fizzgig

“The Dark Crystal” (1982)

Fizzgig is one of the most peculiar sidekicks ever put on screen. A shaggy mess of a thing, this tiny creature looks like a cross between a cat and a Wookie, with enough teeth to scare off any predator stupid enough to attack him. With that being said, Fizzgig is loyal to a tee, sticking by his friends through thick and thin; and that makes him admirable. While he has a slight penchant for shrieking like a deranged banshee every once in awhile, watching his tiny little paws stamp up and down in anger is simply delightful; and every time he walks, we struggle to contain our “awwwwwwws”.

#7: Minions

“Despicable Me” franchise (2010-)

We’ve yet to encounter a single filmgoer who doesn’t melt at the sight of these little yellow guys! Clad in nothing more than a set of blue overalls and goggles, the minions straight up stole the show in “Despicable Me” and its sequels. Needless to say we weren’t exactly surprised when they got their own movie. With their own language – gibberish to us human folk – an aptitude for getting themselves into an ever-increasing series of humorous scenarios, and the sort of jubilant demeanor that only an animated character could rightfully sport, it’s simply impossible not to fall head over heels for these adorable pill-shaped dudes.

#6: Baxter

“Anchorman” franchise (2004-)

Perhaps best known for being on the wrong end of a Jack Black punt that caused him to sail over the side a bridge and into the San Diego Bay, Baxter is Ron Burgundy’s friend, confidant and occasional bear translator. What makes him so damn adorable – other than his lovable eyes and scruffy little head – is his loyalty. He listens to his owner grumble after a hard day and even snuggles up next him at night (clad in matching headgear and jammies, of course). Not to mention, he can eat a whole wheel of cheese!

#5: Belt

“The Croods” (2013)

If you don’t immediately swell with a feeling of extreme pleasure upon seeing this little guy, then you might just be a robot. Belt, so named for his ability to keep his owner’s loincloth up, is a sloth. Apart from generally being the cutest thing on screen for the majority of the film, Belt is also an integral part of the titular family’s journey. He’s not someone you want to mess with, something he made abundantly clear when he pulled a shiv on Gran after she threatened to eat him. Now if someone could tell us where we could get a pet like Belt, that would be great.

#4: Toto

“The Wizard of Oz” (1939)

Toto is the kind of sidekick you hope is by your side if you ever end up in a fantastical world populated by witches, munchkins and flying monkeys. Despite his diminutive stature, Toto casts a considerable shadow. He stands up to evil old ladies, takes charge in dangerous situations and provides his owner with a shoulder to cry on when times are tough. Of course, this isn’t a list of the “Best Sidekicks,” it’s a list of the most adorable. With that being said, we ask you to take one look at Toto’s little face and try not to smile. Go ahead, we’ll wait.

#3: Gromit

“Wallace & Gromit” franchise (1989-)

Gromit may not say much, okay, he doesn’t say anything, but that doesn’t make him any less adorable. In fact, his lack of speech – not to mention a mouth – only serves to enhance the cuteness of his seemingly endless supply of expressions. Not only does he help his goofy, sweater vest-wearing owner with his experiments, but he also actively participates in them, oftentimes providing the answer to questions Wallace himself cannot figure out. Gromit is also a bit of a Renaissance man (or dog), demonstrating an interest in everything from pop culture to philosophy. With his floppy ears and emotive eyes, Gromit is one cinematic pooch we always take pleasure in watching!

#2: Kodo & Podo

“The Beastmaster” (1982)

Kodo and Podo are super cute despite being, well, you know... ferrets. They end up being invaluable to the quest of the film’s protagonist Dar, helping him overcome numerous obstacles. Much like Gromit, Kodo and Podo are silent sidekicks, but watching them scurry about is so damn adorable you pretty much forget this fact immediately. In the end, Kodo makes the ultimate sacrifice in order to help Dar kill the evil high priest Maax. So not only is he cute, but he’s courageous as well!

Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions:

Ludo

“Labyrinth” (1986)

Max

“How the Grinch Stole Christmas” (2000)

Minion

“Megamind” (2010)

#1: Gizmo

“Gremlins” franchise (1984-)

Gizmo is the fictional pet every ‘80s kid wishes they’d had growing up. He’s cute, cuddly and always getting himself into hilarious situations. Of course, if you get him wet, he’ll spawn endless hordes of murderous clones, but we think he’s worth the risk. With his white and brown fur, big beautiful eyes and pointed ears, Gizmo can cause even the most stubborn of viewers to crack a big, toothy grin. Can you imagine opening up a box on Christmas morning to find your own little Gizmo inside? We can and we will continue to keep our fingers crossed in the hope that one day our wish comes true!
