#3: It’s Not Just About Hollywood, It’s About Widespread Social Change
Prominent women in Hollywood wanted to encourage others to keep pushing for social change. On January 1st, 2018, the group, known as Time’s Up, published a manifesto in The New York Times. In this letter, they pay tribute to the groups of more than 700,000 female agricultural workers who had published their own empowerment manifesto in November, as well as all women everywhere seeking an end to sexual harassment and assault in the workplace. The group announced a legal defense fund to help lower-income women (and men) seek justice, and their support for government legislation to punish companies that do not properly address harassment, The manifesto also called for women on the red carpet at the 2018 Golden Globes to wear black, and make their voices heard.
#2: 2017 Was the Tipping Point
2017 will forever be known as the spark for the renewed societal efforts to eliminate sexual misconduct in all its forms.Though it was far from the first time deeply alarming allegations had come out against powerful men in Hollywood (and beyond), the exposure of Harvey Weinstein’s abuse inspired women to bravely come forward to speak out against, tragically, so many other men in the entertainment industry. The year’s revelations also led to the hugely influential social media #metoo movement, which opened the floodgates for women everywhere, in all walks of life, to share their own experiences with sexual assault and harassment. Time’s Up is the next step towards a more fair and equal future where women are believed when they raise their voices.
#1: There Are Big Names Among The Organizers
The Time’s Up movement was not just created by a handful of people.
