#3: It’s Not Just About Hollywood, It’s About Widespread Social Change

Prominent women in Hollywood wanted to encourage others to keep pushing for social change. On January 1st, 2018, the group, known as Time’s Up, published a manifesto in The New York Times. In this letter, they pay tribute to the groups of more than 700,000 female agricultural workers who had published their own empowerment manifesto in November, as well as all women everywhere seeking an end to sexual harassment and assault in the workplace. The group announced a legal defense fund to help lower-income women (and men) seek justice, and their support for government legislation to punish companies that do not properly address harassment, The manifesto also called for women on the red carpet at the 2018 Golden Globes to wear black, and make their voices heard.

The Time’s Up movement was not just created by a handful of people. There are more than 300 women in Hollywood who are the movers and shakers behind the initiative, including prominent actresses as well as directors, producers and other important behind-the-scenes figures.
