Pokémon Sword & Shield Rumors

Welcome to MojoPlays! Today, we’re looking at “Pokémon Sword” and “Shield” rumors, to see what might be on the horizon for the next main game in the series.

Take all of the following information with a grain of salt as not all of these rumors are going to turn out to be true, but we hope a lot of them do.

Starter Evolutions

Early rumors estimate there might be around 106 new Pokémon to catch and train in “Sword” and “Shield”, and some of these newbies have already been revealed. While there is a trend of unsubstantiated fan-art of Pokémon floating around online before the release of a new game, there’s at least three that have been confirmed by Nintendo: Grookey, Scorbunny and Sobble; The new starters. A supposed leaked that showed their evolution forms has already been proven false, but that hasn’t stopped people speculating about what their evolutions might look like. From what we’ve seen in the trailer, though, they’re more than cute enough to please fans.

Legendary Pokémon

With every new game comes a new set of legendary Pokémon, and rumor has it that “Sword” and “Shield’s” legendries are going to be Solar System themed. Some people think this has already been hinted at in subtle references in both “Ultra Sun” and “Moon”, and “Let’s Go, Pikachu!” and “Eevee!”, through a few references to outer space, as well as the late Stephen Hawking's theories on wormholes. However, one post on 4chan by a user who correctly predicting the Galar region’s British theme and the titles – says that one legendary Pokémon will be a wooden horse and another a wooden snake. How these fit in with the Solar System theme is anyone’s guess, but only time will tell who’s right and who’s wrong.

Armored Evolutions

Another rumor from the earlier mentioned 4chan post making the rounds is also very intriguing: the introduction of a brand-new type of evolution, Armored Evolutions, similar to that of the Mega-Evolutions. This rumor is also substantiated by the fact that Nintendo has recently trademarked: “Armored Mewtwo” which is based on a rumour that stemmed from Mewtwo’s initial appearance in the first Pokémon movie. Presumably, Armored Evolutions will give your Pokémon a stylish suit of armor to wear, which is definitely in-keeping with the UK-theme Galar has, if you can literally transform your Pokémon into knights in shining armor. Ultimately, nobody’s going to complain if more evolutions are added, since evolving your Pokémon is one of the best parts of playing.

Fear Status

For a long time, people have been asking Game Freak to add another status ailment to the franchise. There’s speculation that “Fear” might be one such addition, an effect which existing moves or brand-new moves might induce. Fear will supposedly lower accuracy and prevent stat boosts in whichever Pokémon it is inflicted on. Not everybody is excited by this idea, however. The luck aspect of status effects can already be annoying, as would getting used to an entirely new aspect of gameplay. But, anything to mix up the battle system, especially for competitive battles, might be warmly welcomed by hardcore fans.

Two Regions

Without a doubt, the biggest rumor circulating about “Sword” and “Shield” is that it will feature not one, but two explorable regions. While Galar is definitely going to be the main one, there are many who think Kalos from “X” and “Y” might make a return. This is because Kalos is modelled on France, while Galar is the UK, and in real life these two countries have a long history. There’s already a line of thinking that Galar and Kalos have been at war with each other previously, as well as suggestion that some train-tracks to nowhere in Kalos might actually connect to Galar. While the UK and France are separated by the English Channel, a theory suggests that Kalos and Galor aren’t separated in the same manner, but rather Kalos is south of Galor on the same continent and just like “Gold & Silver”, your hometown is on the boarder.
