Just like the rest of FromSoftware's releases, "Elden RIng" has some pretty scary bosses. For this list, we’ll be looking at the most revolting and most frightening bosses to appear in the Lands Between. Our list includes the Putrid Tree Spirit, Astel, Naturalborn of the Void, Decaying Ekzykes, Erdtree Burial Watchdog, and more! Which of these grace-forsaken monstrosities did you find the creepiest? This dual boss isn’t just one of the most difficult in the game - it’s also one of the more unsettling. Godskin Nobles are giant, obese, yet surprsiingly nimble beasts, while the Apostles are freaksigly slender and able to contort and stretch themselves to crazy lengths. And both wear cloaks made out of skin. Put all this together in a tiny arena where they can easily wreck you, and you’ve got yourself a recipe for plenty of game overs and nightmare fuel. Put simply, the Godskin Duo is a double dose of “nope” from us.
This is certainly one of the most visually extravagant bosses in the Soulsborne canon. Serving as the living embodiment of the Elden Ring itself, the Elden Beast is some type of unimaginable cosmic entity. A uniquely terrifying creature, the Elden Beast towers over the player and consists of multiple transparent appendages, containing an assortment of ethereal golden lights. It also comes armed with a fleshy sword that may or may not have been created from Radagon’s shattered corpse. We don’t know if we should be scared or commend FromSoftware for their imagination. Probably both.
Well, it’s all right there in the name. This thing is putrid, and it is awful. Found in the War-Dead Catacombs of Caelid, the Putrid Tree Spirit is an even grosser iteration of the Ulcerated Tree Spirit. And that’s saying something! This thing looks like a cross between a tree and some type of rabid lizard. That’s bizarre enough, but it’s also infested with scarlet rot, which by this point is something every Tarnished has learned to fear. Fighting it is also a nerve-wracking experience, as you try desperately to avoid the rot that it consistently spews. Mother nature has never been so horrifying.
What makes this pair of wicked siblings work so well is the unpredictability of it all. There you are, making your way to the Divine Tower like you have numerous times before, when suddenly the screen fades to black. You can’t see a foot in front of you, and you’re desperately wondering just what in the heck is going on. And then the Fell Twins appear out of the darkness, one of which is wielding a flaming ax. While these are just normal enemies that have been boss-ified, the radical change in scenery is enough to put anyone on edge.
Dragons are scary enough. A dragon inflicted with scarlet rot is straight out of a nightmare. The physical design of this dragon is marvelous. It appears a ghostly, pale white, which clashes well against the deep red of the Caelid sky. However, its body is also patched with crimson splotches, which is the unfortunate result of the scarlet rot, putting it far above its draconian brethren in terms of lethality. Decaying Ekzykes is incredibly strong and can withstand a ton of damage, and its rotten breath can be enough to one-shot you. Suddenly Placidusax doesn’t seem so bad.
Here’s a great formula for any future video game designer. Take an ordinary animal, make it really big, and make it look like it’s in the process of decomposing. There, you have a WTF enemy. The Death Rite Bird appears numerous times throughout “Elden Ring,” and it will never not be scary. These are enormous skeletal birds with huge wingspans, but the creepiest thing about them are their heads. The face has seemingly rotted away, leaving behind a fractured skull, coated in an eerie blue glow. We don’t know what the heck happened here, but we don’t want to find out.
For many, the Erdtree Burial Watchdog might be the first boss they encounter in the Lands between. Unknowing players might venture into the Stormfoot Catacombs in Limgrave, and it’s here that they will face one of the game’s scariest mini-bosses. This thing is just incredibly unsettling. From the rigid manner in which it moves to its creepy demon cat face to the way that it shakes its body before spewing flame - nearly everything about it is unnerving. It serves as a fantastic introductory boss fight, as it lets players know what kind of hellish denizens await them going forward.
Godrick is the first Demigod that players will battle in “Elden Ring,” and what a battle it is. Found at the end of Stormveil Castle, Godrick is not only a challenge, but he’s also very unsettling. As his name suggests, Godrick has a thing for “grafting'' certain objects onto his body. And those certain objects are extra limbs. Godrick has about half a dozen extra arms protruding from his back and shoulders, and that’s plenty terrifying. But wait, it gets worse! Once Godrick is taken down to half health, he quite literally sticks his arm inside a dragon head and uses it to spout fire. Is it totally badass and amazing? Yes. Will it scar you for life? You bet!
This thing both sounds and looks like something straight out of Lovecraft's playbook. According to its in-game description, Astel is some type of deformed star birthed out of the void, and if this is the kind of stuff it’s spitting out, we don’t want to visit it! Astel’s body, made of colored orbs, may be mesmerizing to behold, but everything else is petrifying. It crawls like a spider, and its head consists of a human-looking skull with giant pincers protruding from its cheeks. And no matter how far you run, it can teleport right next to you so you can witness it up close. Oh joy.
Where do we even start with this guy? This is not only the scariest boss in “Elden Ring,” but also one of the scariest bosses in the entire Soulsborne series. Rykard’s gray and scaly face is blood-chilling by itself. The fact that it's attached to a massive snake’s body makes it a million times worse. His skin is also visibly peeling open, revealing lots of human limbs and disgusting tentacles. But that’s not even the worst part! Rykard will eventually pull the Blasphemous Blade out of his snake mouth, and this sword is covered with the still-wriggling remains of his eaten victims. Now this is the kind of outlandish and unimaginable stuff we come to FromSoft for!
