Terry Fox was many things, but foremost he was a hero. After losing a leg to cancer at the age of 18, he pledged to help raise awareness and money for cancer research, to help others struck by the disease. He undertook the famous Marathon of Hope, and ran for 143 days. Finally his cancer returned and he was forced to stop. But an annual run named in his honor continues today to try and reach his same goal.
