Whether he liked it or not, Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain was a spokesman for Generation X and the grunge movement in the early 1990s. His influential music, rebellious attitude and carefree style helped shape the period, and served to propel him to superstardom. Because of his popularity, Cobain also became a fashion icon: his mismatched and tattered clothes, messy hair, flannel shirts, cardigans and unbranded jeans became symbols and were adopted as a uniform for grunge.
