Recipe: How to Make Baked Sweet Potato Fries

This is a healthier (and delicious!) alternative to regular potato French fries.

Ingredients:

- 3 large sweet potatoes, or 2 lbs-worth
- ¼ cup olive oil, or other vegetable oil
- 1-2 tbsp sugar
- 1 tbsp salt
- 1-2 tbsp spice or spice combination of your choice: chipotle powder, smoked paprika, Cajun seasoning, etc.

Directions:

1. Start by preheating your oven to 450 degrees, or 500 if you like your fries crispy. Then prepare your sweet potatoes by peeling and rinsing them.
2. Now, cut off and discard the ends, and cut them into fries. If you want, you can cut them into rounds instead. Either way, try to keep them all the same thickness so they cook evenly.
3. Put your sweet potatoes into a large bowl or a large plastic bag, add the oil, sugar, salt and spices of your choice and mix it well until they’re evenly coated. The sugar caramelizes to give a great flavor and texture to your sweet potatoes.
4. Next, spread your fries out in a single layer on a greased baking sheet.
TIP: If you want to make sure your fries get crisp without having to turn them over, bake them on a cooling rack on top of your baking sheet.
5. Bake your fries for 25-30 minutes or until they’re well browned, and if you’re not using a rack, turn them over halfway through. Let them cool for about five minutes before you serve them.
If you really want to kick it up a notch, use your sweet potato fries to make sweet potato poutine. Just add cheese curds and some gravy and you’re set!
