Held in Munich, Germany each year between late September and the beginning of October, Oktoberfest is one of the country’s most prominent events. In Honor of a Royal Wedding

A common myth about Oktoberfest is that its timing at the beginning of the fall season was set to coincide with the fall harvest. This is not the case. First observed in 1810 to honor a royal wedding, today the festival is more a celebration of Bavarian customs.

Traditional Costumes

Revelers will likely be found wearing traditional garb. The dirndl is worn by women, and is comprised of a blouse, skirt and apron. The ensemble is often ornately embroidered. Lederhosen are leather pants for men, which vary in length. Suspenders are also customary additions to the traditional man’s attire. Hats are also common, and simply amplify the effect of the outfit.

Eating, Drinking, and Music

The activities most associated with Oktoberfest are eating and drinking. At this Bavarian beer festival, that beverage flows freely into huge beer steins. German sausages and pretzels abound and everyone leaves the fest stuffed with hearty fare. Traditional German folk music is played by brass bands, while party-goers sing along and raise their beer steins in celebration.

Showcasing how the event has changed since it was first celebrated; between the beer tents is a large fairground, where amusement park rides greet visitors. In fact, the festival was home to Germany’s first ever roller coaster in 1908.
