Top 10 Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Cast: Where Are They Now?

These actors sure got the golden ticket. Welcome to MsMojo, and today we’re looking at the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Cast: Where Are They Now?

For this list, we’ll be looking at what the cast has been up to since their time at the chocolate factory.

#10: Christopher Lee

While Dr. Wonka, played by the legendary Christopher Lee, was only in the movie for a few short moments, his character was essential in establishing why Willy Wonka was such a peculiar person. Lee is perhaps best known for his portrayal as some of film’s most iconic villains, including the Creature in 'The Curse of Frankenstein' and Saruman in 'The Lord of the Rings', and even a Bond villain. After his performance in CATCF, Lee went on to appear in many films, including 'Hugo' and 'The Golden Compass', and returned to his role as Saruman in 'The Hobbit' series. Sadly, Lee passed away in July of 2017.

#9: Helena Bonham Carter

Helena Bonham Carter is a staple in her now ex-partner Tim Burton’s movies - appearing in ‘CATCF’, 'Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street', and 'Corpse Bride', to name a few. While Bonham Carter tends to take on peculiar characters, she definitely doesn’t shy away from dramatic roles, starring as Elizabeth Taylor in 'Burton and Taylor' and Queen Elizabeth in 'The King's Speech'. She also played a major role in the Harry Potter franchise, appearing in 4 of the franchise's movies as Death Eater Bellatrix Lestrange. Helena most recently played Princess Margaret on Netflix's 'The Crown,' which earned her a supporting actress nomination at the 2020 Golden Globes.

#8: David Kelly

David Kelly's portrayal of Charlie’s Grandpa Joe is arguably one of the late actor’s most famous roles. Kelly’s pre-Chocolate Factory acting career, which began in the 1930s, when he was only 8 years old, included movie and TV appearances in numerous films, such as 'Waking Ned Devine,’ which earned him a Screen Actor Guild nomination for ‘Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role’. After CATCF, Kelly received roles in the psychological thriller 'The Kovak Box' and 'Stardust', where he appeared with a cast that included Michelle Pfeiffer, Henry Cavill, and Robert DeNiro. Sadly, Kelley passed away on February 12, 2012.

#7: Deep Roy

It certainly wouldn't be Willy Wonka's chocolate factory without the help of Oompa Loompas. Deep Roy, who was the sole actor behind all 165 Oompa Loompas that are present throughout the movie, has become most recognizable from his performance as the iconic character. Like Helena Bonham Carter, Roy has also worked with Tim Burton on numerous other movies including 'Corpse Bride', released the same year as CATCF, while also branching out from Burton's movies to appear in 'Paranormal Movie' and the rebooted 'Star Trek' franchise. According to Roy’s Instagram, he is also starting a new food and travel show 'Deep into Food' on IGTV.

#6: Philip Wiegratz

Philip Wiegratz's role as the food-loving Augustus Gloop was his first and only Hollywood role. While he may have stopped taking roles in English movies, he continued his acting career in Germany, snagging roles in the 'Wild Chicks' (Die wilden Hühner) movies, 'Ruby Red' (Rubinrot), and 'Lore'. He also appeared on television in the German mini-series 'Die Wölfe', but hasn’t had any acting credits since 2013. According to his Facebook, Wiegratz went on to study computer science at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg and currently works as a software development engineer.

#5: Jordan Fry

While most people may recognize Jordan Fry as the devilish and video-game loving Mike Teavee, he has gone on to continue his acting career in other movies since his time at Wonka’s factory. After CATCF, which was his first big role, Fry lent his voice as one of the two actors who played protagonist Lewis in the animated film 'Meet the Robinsons.’and played a small role in 'Gone' which starred Amanda Seyfried and Daniel Sunjata. While he hasn’t been credited in any films officially released since 2012, he did star in a YouTube comedy sketch titled ‘I Hate Cats’.

#4: Julia Winter

While Veruca Salt may have cheated her way into finding the second golden ticket, Julia Winter definitely didn’t cheat her way into scoring the role of Veruca - portraying the spoiled and bratty character hilariously. Despite Winter’s success in CATCF, her role as Veruca Salt was sadly her first and only acting role, as she opted to return to her life in London. While not much at all is known about the former child actress, her departure from stardom has seemed to have paid off as she is reportedly now a doctor in her country of birth, Sweden. Here’s to hoping she finally got those squirrels!

#3: AnnaSophia Robb

AnnaSophia Robb found success in Hollywood in a big way in 2005, as she not only starred in CATCF, but also 'Because of Winn-Dixie'. Robb has continued to find great success with acting, starring in movies like “Bridge to Terabithia,” “Soul Surfer' and 'The Way Way Back'. She has also made a name for herself in television, snagging the titular role of Carrie Bradshaw in the “Sex and the City” prequel 'The Carrie Diaries', while also appearing in smaller roles in multiple other series. While she has continued acting post-CATCF, Robb also took time out of her busy schedule to attend New York University where she studied philosophy, ethics, and drama.

#2: Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp became an A-lister for himself in Hollywood by opting to play peculiar and eccentric characters like Edward Scissorhands and Captain Jack Sparrow in the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' franchise - and it was no different when Depp took on the beloved role of chocolate factory owner Willy Wonka. Since his role as Wonka, Depp has reprised his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in additional 'POTC’ movies and also took on new roles as the Mad Hatter in 'Alice in Wonderland', Grindelwald in the 'Fantastic Beasts' series, and Sweeney Todd, alongside his CATCF co-star Helena Bonham Carter. He has also been involved in a very contentious and messy legal battle with his ex-wife, Amber Heard.

#1: Freddie Highmore

As an incredibly successful child actor Freddie could be seen in movies like 'Finding Neverland', as well as “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”. Since starring as CATCF's titular character Charlie Bucket, Highmore has gone on to secure leading roles in films such as “The Spiderwick Chronicles” and “Almost Friends”, and has also had a very successful career on television, starring as Norman Bates in the popular A&E show 'Bates Motel' and as Dr. Shaun Murphy on ABC's 'The Good Doctor’. Like his co-star AnnaSophia Robb, Freddie also somehow found the time to earn a bachelor's degree, majoring in Arabic and Spanish at Emmanuel College at the University of Cambridge. And we think we’re busy...
