The History of Father’s Day

Father’s Day is celebrated around the world as a way to honor dads and express gratitude for their love and affection. To observe the day, people reflect on the individual role played by the father in building the character of his children.

Celebrations Around the World

The officially recognized date of Father’s Day varies from country to country, but this holiday is most commonly celebrated on the third Sunday in June. Even the way Father’s Day is commemorated differs, but what is common everywhere is the spirit of the occasion.

First Father’s Day Celebrations in the U.S.

Father’s Day was first established in the early twentieth century by a daughter who thought all fathers should be honored with a special day, just like we honor our moms on Mother’s Day. Sonora Smart Dodd and her five siblings were raised solely by her father. As a way to show gratitude, she initiated the inaugural Father’s Day celebrations in the United States. Dodd’s father was born in June, and so the first official Father’s Day was held June 19th, 1910 in Spokane, Washington. It was finally signed into law as a national holiday in 1972.

Ways to Celebrate

In countries across the globe, people use Father’s Day as an opportunity to honor their dads with cards, chocolate, flowers and other gifts of love. Spending time with dad and indulging in fun-filled activities is another common feature of celebrations around the world. To publicly express their gratitude, some people wear roses as a mark of their support: a red rose is worn for a father who is living, while a white rose signifies a father who has passed on.

Honor the Men in Your Life

Another interesting fact about Father’s Day wishes is that they are not reserved for biological fathers: grandfathers, stepfathers, foster fathers, uncles, older brothers or anyone who plays the role of the father in someone’s life can be thanked.
