Number 1: The Plot

Developed by Techland and published by Ubisoft, the third game in the series has finally arrived. However, this installment sets itself apart from its predecessors by taking place in the present day. Moreover, the game tells the story of three cops who are above the law, and will do whatever it takes to exterminate a Mexican drug cartel, while secretly cashing in during their downfall.

Number 2: The Characters

At the center of this tale is a trinity of rogue law enforcement officers. These include LAPD detective Ben McCall, who is the bible-spouting grandson of the hero from the original game, Halle Berry-esque FBI agent Kim Evans, and a smooth-talking DEA agent named Eddie Guerra.

Number 3: The Locations

It may not be the Old West anymore, but the action still takes place in a Wild West world of gunplay. Players will navigate Los Angeles and the surrounding areas, players will journey together through a downtown slum, alleyways, nightclubs, car parks, crime infested buildings and surrounding desert areas. Even more exciting is the ability to get behind the wheel for car chases through LA freeways and its vast cityscapes.

Number 4: Gameplay

In a change of pace for the Call of Juarez series, The Cartel has been developed from the ground up as a co-op centered first person shooter. This means that the campaign supports all of the characters simultaneously in three-player online play.

The most defining feature of this change is the series’ new flanking system. This requires you to work with your allies, and have teammates provide cover fire in order to gain ground in enemy territories.

Number 5: The Campaign

With its new co-op centric gameplay, players will have to work together to complete missions. However, The Cartel spices up the formula by having each character carry their own secret agenda that they must complete along the way.

These are centered on schemes to steal drug money, and as an agent of the law, you must achieve your goals without getting caught by your fellow officials. Getting spotted by your teammates will result in the loss of your big payday that you’re gunning for on the side.

In single-player mode, computer AI controls your companions. Because of this, they will not attempt side objectives. Instead, they will only try and catch you while you attempt to complete yours.

Number 6: Online Multiplayer

With its focus on 12-player team gameplay, The Cartel’s multiplayer mode brings a lot to the table. Here, players will compete through 18 massive maps in objective-based modes. These pit teams of cops and robbers against each other in a gangland-style war for control of cocaine. In these modes, robbers must not only find and capture the drugs, but make their way back to their own base with a truck, capture the snitch from police custody and destroy evidence.

Number 7: Mature Rating

Keeping with the B-Movie feel of past installments, this third entry not only shifts into a modern setting, but also presents a much darker theme that pushes a mature rating. This means that the franchise will now feature elements such as adult language, drugs and nudity.

A change of pace for the Call of Juarez series, The Cartel is a present day Wild West crime adventure. More importantly, this radically different entry in the franchise demands that you pump rounds into enemies with the help of your friends.
