10 Things to Know About Assassin’s Creed Valhalla

Welcome to MojoPlays! Today, we’re looking at 10 things to know about “Assassin’s Creed Valhalla”. Are you ready for the long voyage to England?

Cross-Gen

Plenty of people will be pleased to hear that “Valhalla” is neither a current nor next-gen exclusive; releasing the same day as the Xbox Series X and two days before the PlayStation 5, it’s going to be available on both the new platforms at launch and on the previous gen, too. This means you won’t have to rush out and buy a new console to play, and it also means that anyone who was able to get one of those cherished pre-orders will be able to take full advantage of the new hardware. Though the map size is going to be smaller, it’s going to be the most graphically intensive “AC” to date, so the extra horsepower of the ninth generation won’t go to waste.

Various Playstyles

“Odyssey’s” gameplay mechanics left much to be desired from stealth fans which, considering the series was originally stealth-based, was a huge number of players. “Valhalla” has listened to those criticisms, however, and is going to accommodate a wider variety of playstyles – including stealth. As well as the grand return of social stealth and blending, a far larger upgrade and skill system means that if you liked “Odyssey’s” aggressive combat style, you don’t have to change. More than ever before are you going to play “Assassin’s Creed” the way you want to play it, without the game making certain builds far harder to use.

Settlements

The whole reason for you leaving Scandinavia is due to the fact that the climate is too hostile and you want a better life for your clan, which is why Ubisoft is focusing so heavily on “Valhalla’s” settlement building. You’ll be able to establish a settlement and slowly but surely build it up, upgrading and expanding the town. You can invest in plenty of shops and resources, from the invaluable blacksmith to a tattooist. We haven’t really seen a system like this since back in Ezio’s day, and even then it was just a way to make money. Hopefully, building your Viking town will have more narrative significance rather than becoming an optional side-activity.

Raids

The Vikings may have had a rich culture, families of their own, and plenty of poems and sagas, but they’re more famous for traveling across seas and raiding other countries. Though “Valhalla” does promise a nuanced take on Viking life, there are going to be plenty of raids as well; equipped with your customizable longboat, you and your army of personalized raiders will sail to forts and attack them head-on. You’ll be able to choose when you want to gather your raiding party and use the mechanic to your liking. You’ll even be able to share your custom raiders with your friends.

Combat

Where previous games have given you a more limited arsenal of weapons and didn’t let you have much freedom to choose what to do with them, aside from which to equip, “Valhalla” has changed this. Now, you’ll be able to two-hand weapons of all varieties for slower attacks with more damage, and you can dual-wield any one-handed weapon – including, bizarrely, equipping two shields. And you won’t get bored of bashing people to death with your shields either, because the game has more enemy variety than any previous “AC”. It’ll even employ a stamina bar you need to watch to better time your hits and will have the best enemy AI yet.

The Hidden Ones

The last two games did away with the Templar/Assassin war, but “Valhalla” is going back to the series’ roots. Not only is the hidden blade finally returning properly, but so are the actual Hidden Ones. Fans will recognize the “Hidden Ones” as the name of the Assassin Order when it was founded by Bayek and Aya, so they may not call themselves “Assassins” quite yet. But they’ve got their hidden blades and the iconic logo back, so it’s definitely closer to the lore than “Odyssey” was. The game also predates the founding of the Templar Order, so what name the Templars decide to take remains to be seen.

Norse Mythology

“Assassin’s Creed” has often foregrounded the myths and legends of the time, from stumbling across the Ark of the Covenant in the first game to battling Greece’s famous monsters in “Odyssey.” “Valhalla” is going to be no exception and will incorporate Norse mythology and stories throughout. We’ve already seen footage of Jörmungandr, the World Serpent, fresh off his role in “God of War”, but Asgard itself will also play some kind of role with Odin being mentioned in one of the trailers. And if you get the season pass you’ll get three unique Beowulf missions following the legend himself as he battles Grendel.

Eivor

As with every other game, you’re going to have an established protagonist to play as, but Eivor has more customizability than any “AC” hero so far. You’ll be able to change Eivor’s gender at any point during the game as there’s plenty of historical evidence that the Vikings did have female warriors. But you’ll also be able to change Eivor’s hair as well as equipping different outfits, and of course, once you get the tattoo parlor for your settlement, you can tattoo them to your heart’s content. Ubisoft has assured fans that the gender-switching mechanic will tie into the game’s narrative, too.

Setting

This time around, we’re heading to England in the 9th century, in the midst of the Dark Ages. Our Viking clan has headed across the North Sea from Norway in search of greener pastures but has to contend with England’s Medieval kings. Scotland and Wales won’t feature despite being on the British mainland as well, but England alone will be big enough, divided into four large kingdoms: Mercia, Wessex, Northumbria, and East Anglia. You’ll be battling against and making allegiances with various leaders as well as attracting the attention of Alfred the Great, King of the Anglo-Saxons and enemy of the invading Vikings.

Player Choice

“Odyssey” was already crossing into full-fledged RPG territory, with “Witcher”-style dialogue options and limited agency to affect the story. “Valhalla” plans to take this even further. Dialogue options are bigger and better than before, while at various points during the game, players will be asked to choose between different factions to ally with – potentially making enemies of the rest. You’ll be shaping the fate of Medieval England and your clan of Vikings like never before, providing the most freedom yet offered in the franchise. This means you can be the ruthless and bloodthirsty Vikings of legend, or you can forgo violence as much as possible.
