There will be some minor spoilers!
#10: Mark Wahlberg
You know you have limited range when Seth McFarlane can out-act you through voice alone. This Bostonian actor has played comedies, action films, sci-fi flicks, and sports dramas, but his persona is largely the same: Tough, fast-talking, no nonsense, and streetwise. Usually Wahlberg plays cops, boxers, and everyday tough guys. His being saddled with repetitive, subpar scripts didnt make matters easier, either. In 2017s Transformers, his characters continual insistence that he is an inventor became a meme in its own right. A creative actor would have made it work, but alas, Wahlbergs range is that limited. Also, does he ever change out that Boston accent?
#9: George Clooney
Who can resist that Clooney charm, distinguished presence, and smooth line delivery? The problem is, those qualities that made this actor so successful are precisely the ones that prevent him from disappearing into a role. Clooney seems to have developed a niche for lawyer roles in particular. Even when he does something new, it is generally in connection to that persona. His turn as Batman in the infamous 1997 film Batman and Robin was a disappointment in many ways, with even Clooney admitting it was a waste of money. Clooney has done slightly different roles, to be sure, but he will always be recognizable as himself.
#8: Michael Cera
This Canadian actor began in quirky indie films like Superbad, Juno, and Nick and Norahs Infinite Playlist. Unfortunately, that seems to be the beginning and end of his acting capacities. Cera has tried, though, taking on dramas, biopics, animated films, and even Broadway. However, by and large he remains Michael Cera: An awkward and ordinary boy-next-door type. That is, until its time for him to whip out fantastic fighting moves that amaze everybody. Its fun to watch, to be sure, but it doesnt make for great range. Critics seem to prefer his TV material more, so maybe its just a film thing.
#7: Channing Tatum
This dreamboat of an actor is actually more of a boat than an actor. Tatums persona is a very specific and fixed one, to wit: A handsome lug, rough around the edges, with sex appeal. Its there in his romantic comedies, action comedies, comedy dramas, heist comedies a lot of comedies, come to think of it. Tatum does occasionally take on more difficult roles, such as Jody in The Hateful Eight, where he does look unrecognizable. And he puts his singing and dancing talents on display in the quirky Hail, Caesar! and the raunchy Magic Mike trilogy. Mostly, though, Tatum is the type of actor you hire for dumb jock characters.
#6: Gal Gadot
Following her debut in Fast & Furious, this actress found a true breakthrough role as the DC superhero Wonder Woman. That said, the acting qualities that made her the perfect Diana made her a less than perfect actress elsewhere. Countless memes have been made of her monotone line delivery, limited facial expressions, and consistent lack of emotion. When acting in urgent situations filled with action and drama, Gadot sounds only mildly inconvenienced at best. Even her Evil Queen in 2025s Snow White lacks the panache and camp of the original film. To make matters worse, the auto tuned singing is atrocious.
#5: Vince Vaughn
It can be tricky to portray a quick-talking, smart-mouthed character well, and to his credit, thats Vaughns specialty. But admittedly, its the only role he ever does. Vaughn gave a very good performance in the 1996 comedy Swingers, which became his career breakthrough. From sports comedies to romantic comedies to buddy comedies, Vaughn embodies this persona to a T. When he does try to extend himself, such as in the 1998 remake of Alfred Hitchcocks Psycho, Vaughn cant quite match Anthony Perkins chilling performance. The problem is that he lacks variety in his line delivery and cadence. At least he tried.
#4: Kevin Hart
This Pennsylvanian comedian is probably best on the standup stage. In his films, Hart portrays wisecracking, down-to-earth, straight-talking characters. His comic range seems to include irritation, indignation, and bewilderment. Most of his films, if not all of them, are comedies of many kinds, from the parody horror film Scary Movie 3 to Little Fockers to the recent Jumanji remake. Hart even starred as a fictionalized version of himself in the reality TV show parody Real Husbands of Hollywood. Harts stand-up routines seem more his style, getting consistently good ratings, so maybe film is not his thing.
#3: Kevin James
Were dragging all the Kevins over the coals, it seems. This Canadian actor is instantly recognizable, even if you have never seen the TV show The King of Queens before. James plays kind, bumbling, oftentimes confused, but usually well-meaning comedy characters, mostly in supporting roles. Whether a socially awkward businessman in need of lessons or getting married to his buddy or a mall cop, James is instantly recognizable in any movie he appears in. Occasionally he takes on a role slightly outside his typecast, as in the 2015 film Little Boy directed by Alejandro Gómez Monteverde. But mostly, hes just Kevin James.
#2: Michelle Rodríguez
This Fast and Furious actress is known for her fast and furious acting - almost literally. Rodríguez has made a career out of portraying tough-as-nails action heroines with great aim, martial arts skills, and zero emotional vulnerability. This makes her perfect for the Fast and Furious franchise, but also other action roles that are, less face it, almost exactly the same as Letty. Fortunately for Rodríguez, she doesnt venture too far from this type of role in her other films. But if you ever need an actress to portray a stoic badass, Rodríguez can do it again. And again. And again.
#1: Will Ferrell
Think excitable manchild with a funny scream. Chances are, Will Ferrell came to mind. This Saturday Night Live alum displayed his particular brand of comedy as Buddy in Elf, and Ron Burgundy in Anchorman, both among his more well-known roles. But even beyond the 2000s, Ferrell continued to act within this typecast. In 2023s Barbie, he reprised his corporate parody role with enjoyable but certainly not unique results. The Other Guys did see Ferrell with a more understated comic delivery, though, against straight guy Mark Wahlberg. Still, Ferrell has never strayed too far from his usual persona.
