Welcome to MojoPlays, and today, we’re taking a look at 10 of the hardest missions we’ve ever endured in horror games.
Chapter 9
“The Evil Within” (2014)
This portion of “The Evil Within” still haunts many, many players to this day for one reason and one reason only. Throughout this chapter, you will be stalked by Ruvik, and his appearances become more and more frequent as you progress. You will need to be on your guard at all times because if Ruvik gets close enough to you, it will result in an instant death. But the way he can just pop out of nowhere and start chasing you down makes this entire chapter insanely stressful. Know where your hiding spots are, and you should make it out of this in one piece…mostly.
Medical
“Dead Space” (2008)
“Dead Space” can be a pretty tough game to get through depending how jumpy you are. If you’re squeamish or easily frightened, yeah, you’re going to double or triple the game’s actual runtime. The biggest hurdle you’ll come across is likely going to be when you reach Medical. This is a major turning point for the game as Necromorphs become significantly more threatening here. You’ll encounter them in greater numbers, and you might find it tougher to fend them off than when you first arrived on the Ishimura. Make sure you stock up before reaching this part of the ship because resources are going to be scarce in this sector, even scarcer if playing on a harder difficulty.
Chapter 2
“Amy” (2012)
“Amy” is hard to play for…a variety of reasons. It is an absolute broken mess of a game that has allowed it to earn the dishonor of being the worst horror game ever made. But for anyone daring to tackle this dumpster fire, Chapter Two is the filter. This is where you will discover just how busted the AI is, how poorly designed the levels are, how mundane the mechanics are, and how often you might be asking the game, “what in the hell do you want me to do???” Do yourself a favor and just…don’t play “Amy”.
Chapter 10
“Condemned: Criminal Origins” (2005)
For most horror games, the hardest parts are when resources are scarce or there’s an invincible enemy you have to run away from. Some just have convoluted puzzles that almost require a guide on standby. But in the case of “Condemned: Criminal Origins”, Chapter 10 lives on in infamy for simply being way too combat-oriented. Not only that, but it is loaded with brutes, which, as expected, are damage sponges. And in case you haven’t played “Condemned”...the combat does have a bit of a learning curve to it. So, hopefully you’ve gotten a firm grasp and know how to handle a brute.
The Labyrinth
“Silent Hill 2” (2024)
This is the one part in “Silent Hill 2” that is going to make or break you, and we don’t mean mentally. That’s the story’s job. No, the Labyrinth can be extremely grueling to go through on account of how much harder the remake’s combat is. With its more refined system, it is a lot tougher to fend off Mandarins and avoid Pyramid Head. Not only that, but this portion of the game features some of the most mind-boggling puzzles in the game. Oh, and you don’t have a map! FUN, RIGHT??
The First Night
“Fatal Frame III: The Tormented” (2005)
Now, when you’re playing “Fatal Frame III” for the first time ever, the first night isn’t all that bad. These games can be a bit harrowing in some cases, but nothing super oppressive…until you play on higher difficulties. On Nightmare Mode, the first night is almost impossible to get through as ghosts can kill you in one or two hits. Avoiding them is a challenge in itself because of how cramped the environment is. And to cap it all off, your camera is buns. You deal very miniscule damage with your camera. It’s ridiculous.
The Server Room
“Alien: Isolation” (2014)
Would you believe that the biggest threat in “Alien: Isolation” isn’t the Xenomorphs? Yeah, sounds like a total lie until you get to the server room. This area has become the bane of many players, and it’s all because of the Working Joes wandering around. Yes, you still have to worry about the Xenomorphs crawling around, but it is really easy to discern where they’re hiding. The Working Joes have some whack patrol paths, and once you’re spotted, your entire attempt is pretty much done. Reload checkpoint because there is no escape.
The Hospital
“Resident Evil 3” (2000)
Oh, dear god…the hospital. Look, “Resident Evil 3” is a fine game for roughly the first two-thirds of the playthrough. But once you get to the hospital, well, welcome to Cheap Death City! Population: you and a crap ton of hunters! These lummoxes are lurking all over the place and can kill Chris with just a single hit. What’s worse is that this entire building feels cramped in every room, making it extremely hard to avoid them. The 2020 remake didn’t make this segment anymore enjoyable either.
All of It
“Siren” (2003)
“Siren” might just be the toughest horror game in general. The reason for this is because of its key mechanic: the ability to tap into the minds of the deranged creatures. On one hand, this does help you locate where enemies are and what directions they’re looking in. On the other hand, if they go off the beaten path and find you in an inconvenient spot, things may not turn out pretty for you. Of course, things might be very rough when playing it for the first time. You’re just going to have to study their patterns (if any) and know when your windows to escape and grab things appear.
50/20 Mode
“Ultimate Custom Night” (2018)
It is the most notorious challenge in both “Five Nights at Freddy’s” and horror gaming history. The dreaded 50/20 Mode is exactly as it sounds. For those unfamiliar, “Ultimate Custom Night” is a FNAF spin-off that features every single animatronic that had appeared in a game up until 2018. The main attraction was to let players customize their own FNAF experience by mixing and matching animatronics together to create unique challenges. Well, 50/20 Mode requires you to activate all fifty animatronics and set them to the highest difficulty in the game. It is so difficult that the Steam community for the game has a dedicated list of “50/20 Champions” to commemorate.
