Welcome to MojoPlays, and today, we’re taking a look at 10 classic video game trilogies that could benefit from getting remakes.
“Darkstalkers” series (1994-97)
Whether you remake them one at a time or just mash all three of them together, it’s entirely up to Capcom. But there is something to be said about “Darkstalkers” making a grand return in some form. Fighting games are way bigger in the 2020s than they ever were before, and part of that is thanks to “Street Fighter 6” and its competitors. However, Capcom is sitting on tons of different fighting game IPs, and of them all, “Darkstalkers” is the one that hasn’t had a fair shot since 1997. The games have received plenty of ports, compilations, and remasters. But why hasn’t there been a new game let alone a remake or reboot? Heck, you could probably get the folks at Reverge Labs, the “Skullgirls” developers, to make a gorgeous as hell “Darkstalkers” game!
“Wild Arms” series (1996-2018)
To be fair, “Wild Arms” isn’t really a trilogy, but there are reasons why no one talks about “Wild Arms 4” or even WA5. The first three games have stood the test of time with their unique combat systems and captivating worlds. But imagine how much better than can be if they got the same remake treatment as we’ve seen from several other JRPGs. “Final Fantasy VII Remake”, “Persona 3 Reload”, and “Dragon Quest VII” have each seen insane face lifts in gameplay, visuals, and story, and it’s resulted in attracting more fans for their respective franchises. So, imagine how big “Wild Arms” could get just from remaking the first game with a proper budget and a team who is just as desperate to see this franchise return as its fandom is.
“Killzone” series (2004-13)
There is no denying that the “Killzone” trilogy still looks absolutely incredible despite running on PlayStation 3. Really, this game is still visually stunning no matter how many times we look at it! Unfortunately, it’s a drastically different story when playing it. The controls aren’t horrendous, but the scheme itself is what’s made the games age kinda horribly. “Killzone’s” control scheme does not match the modern sensibilities that modern FPS games have adopted since the last time we saw the Helghast. If you can adapt, they’re still great games. But this control scheme plus the outdated technical performance is why “Killzone” would benefit tremendously from a remake.
“Disgaea” series (2003-)
The first three “Disgaea” games are some of the hardest tactical RPGs you could possibly play. The difficulty spikes are brutal, the menu navigation isn’t easily readable, and the excessive grinding required for boss fights can make the games feel like a slog. Those reasons alone are why those games need to be remade. “Disgaea 4”, 5, and 6 have slowly, but surely allowed newcomers to jump in thanks to their improvements in UI and pacing. So, why not take the original three and bring them up to the same level of quality?
“Alone in the Dark” series (1992-2024)
We’ve roasted “Alone in the Dark” on MojoPlays for quite some time now. This franchise has spent more time disappointing players than innovating or capturing our attention. At this point, Atari has to find someone who can appreciate the original trilogy that came before “The New Nightmare” began the plunge in quality. All three of the original “Alone in the Dark” games are still revered for their environments, scares, and visuals at the time. If Atari can find a team that appreciates those games enough to want to remake them, maybe “Alone in the Dark” has a brighter future. Alas, it’s been so long since we had a good game that it’s hard to entertain the fantasy.
“Devil May Cry” series (2001-24)
Now, we have HD ports of the first three “Devil May Cry” games commercially available on almost every major gaming platform. They each play the same way they did back when they respectively launched, just with refined controls and visuals. But let’s be honest - these games still don’t handle all that great. Dante moves so slow, the fixed camera angles aren’t serviceable, and the lack of tutorials can make things a bit frustrating for new players. If we’re not getting DMC6 anytime soon, especially with Hideaki Itsuno not being at Capcom anymore, maybe now is a good time to remake the original trilogy with new leadership and new visuals on that sexy RE Engine.
“Resistance” series (2006-12)
“Resistance” is in a similar situation as “Killzone” in that it does not control as well as modern FPS games typically do. Yes, it's a fun game with fun ideas, but there are still some control scheme decisions that don’t make a ton of sense compared to your typical FPS. Triangle for melee? L3 for ADS? L2 to crouch? Of course, a remaster could easily remedy this, but with the entire franchise between generations behind, why not go the extra mile and give it some visual touchups along with improved tech? It’d be better in the long run.
“Xenosaga” series (2002-06)
The “Xenosaga” trilogy is one of the best series of JRPGs we saw during the PS2 days. Unfortunately, it only captured us at the time because of the visuals and animation. As for the game itself, it is so heavy on cutscenes, complex in mechanics, and unbalanced in pacing that it makes the games extremely hard to sit through. That said, it’d be really cool if Nintendo, Monolith Soft, and Bandai Namco could work together to make a streamlined, focused remake of all three games. Hell, it might even make an enticing Switch 2 exclusive.
“Fable” series (2004-)
At the time of this video, the “Fable” reboot developed by Playground Games is on the horizon. Personally, I am insanely excited for this game as a longtime “Fable” fan. Still, there’s a part of me that would like to see the original three games remade in some way. Even with Xbox’s backwards compatibility and enhancement technology, “Fable II” and “Fable III” don’t look as great as they could without the insane bloom, motion blur, and, in the case of “Fable II”, slightly choppy frame rate. Plus, the original “Fable” may look pretty damn good with its “Anniversary” remaster, but some characters, such as your Hero, don’t look right. Remakes for all three games could really help show why “Fable” became such a huge hit among Xbox players back then.
“Jak and Daxter” series (2001-09)
One may ask for remakes of “Ratchet & Clank” or “Sly Cooper”, but in their defense, those games still play beautifully whether you’re playing the PS2 originals or their PS3 HD ports. As for “Jak and Daxter”, these games have aged like milk, “Jak II” and “Jak 3” more so than the 2001 original. Movement is slow, traffic in New Haven makes navigation difficult at times, and the auto-aim function between the two sequels barely works half the time. Should Naughty Dog keep the remakes rolling and somehow pull themselves away from “The Last of Us”, they could do themselves and the fans a favor and remake these games with better controls and level design.
