Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we’re looking at celebrities whose “good girl” images fell apart in very public and unexpected ways.

Allison Mack

Talk about a fall from grace. Allison Mack was once admired for her role as Chloe Sullivan on the young Superman series “Smallville.” On the show, she embodied a charismatic and earnest girl-next-door persona. That image all but imploded when she became a central figure in the NXIVM cult scandal. Prosecutors revealed she helped recruit women into what was presented as a self-improvement group, but functioned as a coercive organization led by Keith Raniere. Mack ultimately pled guilty to racketeering charges in 2019 - admitting she manipulated women under the group’s hierarchy. Naturally, the contrast between her on-screen sweetness and the disturbing nature of the crimes shocked fans.

Bella Thorne

This Disney alum didn’t just shed her image - she blew it wide open. Bella Thorne rose to fame on the series “Shake It Up” as another squeaky-clean teen star. But, as she moved into adulthood, a string of headline-making controversies chipped away at that wholesome persona. In 2019, she sparked much debate when she publicly released her own nude photos after a hacker threatened to leak them. The following year, her high-profile launch on OnlyFans drew intense backlash from sex workers who argued that her pricing methods caused platform policy changes that hurt their income. Between the explicit self-rebranding, public spats, and mounting criticism, Thorne’s clean-cut Disney image is long gone.

Addison Rae

Once the internet’s sweetheart, Addison Rae built her brand on TikTok as an approachable, upbeat teen influencer. However, her “good girl” persona began to slip as public scrutiny intensified. Early backlash erupted when resurfaced political posts tied to her family sparked debate about the values behind her branding. Her lead role in the Netflix remake “He's All That” drew accusations of influencer privilege – not to mention harsh reviews. Around the same time, she faced criticism after performing viral dances on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” without crediting the predominantly Black creators behind them. Combined with a more mature, sexualized image in her “Obsessed” music rollout, these incidents gradually chipped away at the innocent persona that originally made her famous.

JoJo Siwa

Few transformations stunned fans quite like this one. JoJo Siwa spent years cultivating one of entertainment’s most relentlessly cheerful images - oversized bows, neon branding, and an ultra-kid-friendly persona. That began to unravel in 2023 and 2024 as she boldly rebranded with more adult themes and provocative performances. Her song “Karma” became a flashpoint, sparking online chatter and mixed reactions that amplified the perception of a jarring shift. She has continued to evolve her image while carrying on a relationship with fellow “Celebrity Big Brother UK” alum Chris Hughes. And, well, the less we say about that “Bette Davis Eyes” cover the better.

Reese Witherspoon

For years, Reese Witherspoon represented the all-American sweetheart thanks to her roles in films like “Legally Blonde” and “Sweet Home Alabama.” Heck, her public demeanor was also polished and welcoming. Well, that all changed in 2013 when she and her then-husband Jim Toth were arrested during a traffic stop. Witherspoon’s confrontational behavior - captured on police recordings - showed her invoking her celebrity status. Yep, Reese uttered the classic line, “Do you know my name?” Although she apologized and took full responsibility, the incident no doubt dimmed her reputation as one of Hollywood’s most graceful public figures.

Kristen Stewart

Early in her “Twilight” fame, Kristen Stewart was known for her low-key yet innocent persona. But that image unraveled in 2012 when paparazzi photos revealed her affair with “Snow White and The Huntsmen” director Rupert Sanders. Not only was he married at the time, but Stewart was in a relationship with her beloved “Twilight” co-star Robert Pattinson. The fallout was disastrous. And while she later rebuilt her career with acclaimed indie roles, she also underwent a visible personal transformation. Her 2017 “Saturday Night Live” monologue - where she stated “I’m so gay” – marked another major turning point. Paired with bolder fashion and edgier film choices, Stewart now embraces a more authentic public identity.

Lea Michele

Lea Michele rose to stardom as the ambitious and endearing lead of “Glee.” And while many fans assumed she carried her character’s more positive traits off-screen – they were wrong. Yep, in 2020 several former cast members accused Michele of microaggressions and creating a hostile work environment. And when more colleagues echoed these claims, it painted a damning picture – one that contrasted sharply with her public image. Michele issued a statement acknowledging her behavior caused pain, but the damage was already done. The once-inspiring Broadway and TV favorite suddenly became synonymous with being toxic and an overall tormentor.

Amanda Bynes

Few child stars experienced a more heartbreaking unraveling than Amanda Bynes. The actress was celebrated throughout the 2000s for her comedic timing on Nickelodeon and films like “What a Girl Wants.” However, by the early 2010s, her public struggles - including mental health crises – started to dominate the headlines. A DUI arrest, a reckless-endangerment charge, and her conservatorship battle drew major media attention - highlighting the severity of her difficulties. Add in erratic social media posts and her public troubles had completely overshadowed her earlier success. The turmoil that followed has made Amanda Bynes one of Hollywood’s most tragic examples of a collapsed “good girl” image.

Lori Loughlin

Not “Aunt Becky!?” Lori Loughlin long embodied warmth and integrity thanks to her role on “Full House.” Of course, this made her involvement in the 2019 college admissions scandal all the more shocking. Prosecutors alleged she and her husband paid bribes to secure their daughters’ admission to USC. Another celebrity parent, Felicity Huffman, was also charged - but she never had the same “wholesome mom” reputation Loughlin did. And while Huffman quickly pled guilty, expressed remorse, and served a short sentence – Loughlin initially fought the charges, intensifying public backlash. When she ultimately pled guilty, the scandal’s elitist undertones clashed so sharply with her TV persona that her decades of goodwill disappeared..

Ellen DeGeneres

Affectionally known as the “Be Kind Lady,” Ellen DeGeneres spent years as daytime television’s symbol of warmth and positivity. Then, it all came crashing down. A series of 2020 reports alleged a toxic workplace environment behind the scenes of her talk show. Employees described intimidation, misconduct, and a culture contradicting the program’s cheerful public face. DeGeneres issued an on-air apology - saying she was unaware of the severity. But, the revelations triggered a major reputational decline and severe ratings drop. Come the show’s conclusion, Ellen’s friendly comfort figure had evaporated – marking a striking reversal that has completely reshaped her legacy.
