By 1910, Antarctica had become a fascinating beacon of undiscovered territory to the world. That was the year two groups set out to become the first exploration team to reach the South Pole. British naval officer Robert Falcon Scott assembled a team, as did Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen. Unfortunately, the British team did not plan for unexpected setbacks, and they were caught without supplies only 11 miles away from civilization and perished, with Amundsen becoming the first to reach the Pole.
