VOICE OVER: Peter DeGiglio WRITTEN BY: Whitney Wilson
These athletes are crazy generous! For this list, we'll be looking at athletes who go above and beyond when giving back to their fans, communities, and the greater good. Our countdown includes Roger Federer, John Cena, J.J. Watt, and more!

#10: Andrew McCutchen

This five-time All-Star isn’t just an MVP in the outfield, but he is an MVP off the field, too. McCutchen has spent days with several kids through Make-A-Wish, playing catch and even taking over the JumboTron for video games. In 2015, McCutchen cut and auctioned off his signature dreadlocks for charity. The next year, the Pittsburgh Pirates named McCutchen their most philanthropic player. The outfielder was traded from the Pirates in 2018, but he still considers Steel City his home. He and his wife Maria founded Project Pittsburgh, and they made a large donation to the 412 Food Rescue in 2020. From volunteering at children’s hospitals during Cutch Charity Week to volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, McCutchen strives to make the world a better place.

#9: Ronda Rousey

Rowdy Ronda is a force to be reckoned with in competition, and she is a massive force for good outside of it. The Olympian is committed to battling mental health stigmas around the world. Rousey tragically lost her father when she was eight years old and works closely with Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services to provide free counseling services to those in need. In 2013, Rousey offered fans the chance to train with her if they donated to the organization. Rousey has also auctioned off autographed items to benefit victims of domestic violence and their pets in the Las Vegas area through The Shade Tree and Noah's Animal House. She really is a powerhouse in more ways than one.

#8: Drew Brees

This Super Bowl champion is regarded as one of the best quarterbacks and people to ever play the game. Brees signed with the New Orleans Saints in 2006, only months after Hurricane Katrina tore apart the city. He quickly fell in love with The Crescent City and expanded his Brees Dream Foundation to help rebuild schools, parks, and playgrounds in New Orleans. Over the course of his career, Brees and his wife Brittany donated more than $33 million to a variety of charities. During the height of the pandemic in 2020, they donated millions to relief efforts in Louisiana. After retiring in 2021, Brees even personally helped with repairs to businesses impacted by Hurricane Ida. He really is an MVP in his beloved city.

#7: John Cena

You can’t always see him, but John Cena spends a lot of his time outside of the ring helping others. The wrestling superstar has granted more than 650 wishes for kids through the Make-A-Wish Foundation and holds the record as the top wish-granter in history. He gives his young fans shout outs and wears gifts from them in the ring as well. Cena is also very outspoken about social causes and has donated to Black Lives Matter. Fans have reported that Cena does quiet acts of kindness in everyday life, such as paying for veterans’ groceries and taking selfies with them. He is a true champion in more ways than one.

#6: Stephen “Steph” Curry

The NBA’s only unanimous MVP never misses a chance to give back. Curry loves talking with and dedicating time to fans. He has been a long-time partner with the appropriately named organization Nothing But Nets, which is dedicated to fighting malaria around the world. During the pandemic in 2020, Curry FaceTimed nurses in Oakland to thank them for all they were doing. He and his wife Ayesha created the Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation, which provided 16 million meals to families in Oakland during the pandemic. The top three-point shooter of all time is also a huge fan of golf and both hosts and participates in charity golf events for a variety of causes. On and off the court, Curry just does not miss.

#5: Serena Williams

She is one of the greatest athletes of all time, and she has one of the biggest hearts of anyone to ever step on the tennis court. In 2004 and 2005, she and her sister Venus had a charity tour where they visited hospitals and played matches to raise money for Ronald McDonald House charities. Williams has been a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since 2011, working closely with the organization to provide education to children in marginalized communities in Africa. In 2020, the superstar donated more than 4 million masks to schoolchildren. After winning at the ASB Classic, Williams donated her prize money to Australian bushfire relief efforts. Williams’ incredible career has been woven with kindness and generosity.

#4: Roger Federer

This tennis powerhouse is also one of the most kind-hearted people in the world. He created the Roger Federer Foundation in 2003, which is focused on educational and sustainable projects in Switzerland and Southern Africa. More than 1.75 million children have participated in programs through the foundation. Federer has also raised money for a large variety of causes, including relief efforts related to Hurricane Katrina and the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami. As a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, Federer has raised public awareness of AIDS. In 2020, his foundation donated $1 million to provide meals for children and their families while their schools were closed due to the pandemic. Federer is one of the greatest of all time in more ways than one.

#3: P. K. Subban

This gold-medal Olympian also has a heart of gold. The hockey star created the P. K. Subban Foundation in 2014, which is dedicated to helping children and their families during difficult times. The following year, Subban pledged $10 million to the Montreal Children’s Hospital and threw a Winter Wonderland party for its young patients. Subban’s generous gift was reported by the hospital to be the largest financial philanthropic commitment by an athlete in Canadian history. In 2020, Subban donated $50,000 to Gianna Floyd, the young daughter of the late George Floyd. Subban’s accomplishments on the ice are incredible, but his contributions off the ice are even more amazing.

#2: Russell Wilson

This Super Bowl champion is one of the kindest people to ever play American football. He created the Why Not You Foundation in 2014 to fight poverty, provide education and empower youth. Wilson makes weekly visits to the Seattle Children's Hospital, and in 2016, his foundation gave the hospital more than $1 million. Every year, the quarterback co-hosts a charity golf event to benefit organizations like Boys & Girls Clubs of America. Wilson is the National Ambassador for the Charles Ray III Diabetes Association, an organization that provides equipment to help people manage diabetes. He and his wife Ciara donated $1 million to Food Lifeline and Feeding America and $1.75 million to fund a Seattle-area charter school during the pandemic. We’re lucky to have Wilson.

#1: J. J. Watt

This three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year is known throughout the league for his thoughtfulness and generosity. He developed the Justin J. Watt Foundation, which is focused on providing funding to middle school athletic programs. Watt hosts several events throughout the year to raise money for the organization, including the Charity Classic softball game. After Hurricane Harvey devastated the Houston area in 2017, Watt raised more than $37 million dollars for the relief efforts, which resulted in more than 1,100 homes built. In the aftermath of the Santa Fe High School attack in 2018, Watt offered to pay for the funeral services of the victims. He also covered the costs of the funerals for the Waukesha parade attack victims in 2021. Watt’s kindness has helped countless people throughout the country.
