It has become one of the most successful stage musicals of the past 5 years, being nominated for 4 Tony Awards including best musical before moving to London's West End in February 2019, however the film of the same name, upon which this musical is based, was a far more modest outing, only raking in around $22m at the box office.

This is a rare instance of a musical adaptation of a film being readapted into another film, however the 1960 comedy by Roger Corman predates the stage musical by almost 25 years, and provided the great Jack Nicholson with one of his earliest on-screen roles.
