Since "household name" is a slippery term, it's hard to pin when Hopkins achieved this status. Certainly he did so in the UK before the US. In the US it was probably with Remins of the Day in 1993 when he was 55. He was 43 when he played in The Elephant Man.

Since Leslie Nielson turned 40 in 1966, it isn't hard to show that the fame he got with 1980's Airplane and especially 1988's Naked Gun, came when he was over that age.
