Top 10 21st Century UK Films

Some of the movies on this list are British indie flicks, and therefore unlikely to be on the general moviegoers radar. Nonetheless, the 10 I've chosen are what I deem this century's Britflick classics.
The UK movies made in the 2000s that are the personnification of great British films

    1The Theory of Everything (2014)
Top notch acting, top notch directing, top notch screenplay, and a terrific movie score that heightens the movie's mood and atmosphere.
  • 2Byzantium (2012)
In my opinion, it is both the finest Gemma Arterton film has starred in and the best vampire movie of this century.
  • 3Lady Macbeth (2016)
This is one of the prime examples of an actress carrying a movie. Florence Pugh competently shoulders this responsibility, aided by a director that makes the best use of her talent.
  • 4The Violators (2015)
This low-budget drama was criminally underexposed. Its director - Helen Walsh - and its 2 female leads - Lauren McQueen & Brogan Ellis - helped this film become an overlooked British cinematic gem.
  • 5An Education (2009)
Quite possibly the best performance Carey Mulligan has ever given on film. Its great supporting cast and acclaimed director strenghtened her portrayal of the lead character.
  • 6The Lobster (2014)
You only need to watch around 20 minutes of this movie to realise its plotline is as close to a wholly original one as we're likely to get.
  • 7Fish Tank (2009)
One of the few films I know that thrives on a minimalist script. Its brilliance is helped by the casting of Katie Jarvis who, at that time, had no acting experience whatsoever.
  • 8Tamara Drewe (2010)
I can count this Stephen Frears movie as one of the best romcoms of the 21st century. There's a lot to recommend it over the Richard Curtis-directed films. The humour is sharp, deliciously dark and inventive, elements all future romantic comedies need.
  • 9My Summer of Love (2004)
Emily Blunt and Nathalie Press couldn't have had a better start to their movie careers. They invested their acting skills into this film wholeheartedly, turning this story about a lesbian relationship that goes wrong immensely watchable.
  • 10Anna Karenina (2012)
My favourite costume drama film of the 2000s. Joe Wright's direction and the cast's performances successfully brought the much-filmed Tolstoy novel to a new generation of moviegoers.
  • 11The Witch (2016)
  • 12Sing Street (2016)
  • 13The Scouting Book For Boys (2009)
  • 14Paddington (2015)
