Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery Releases First Trailer

From the printed page to the silver screen, Harry Potter has cemented its place as one of the most beloved franchises ever. The series hasn’t translated so well to video games, however. While there are several games set in the Wizarding World, most of them have been movie tie-ins that ranged from passable to unplayable. Maybe that’s part of the reason why Dudley Dursley threw his PlayStation out the window in Goblet of Fire. Well in any case, we can only hope that Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery will break this curse.

Announced last January, this Harry Potter role-playing game for Android and iOS is already being called the next Pokemon Go. The first teaser trailer recently arrived and it certainly captures the magical essence one would expect.

Being a mobile experience, most gamers aren’t expecting Hogwarts Mystery to achieve the same level of acclaim as Zelda: Breath of the Wild or Horizon Zero Dawn. However, it will offer something we’ve been waiting years for: a game where you get to step into the shoes of a Hogwarts student. Receiving a letter from an owl, players are invited to attend the School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and select their Hogwarts House.

As demonstrated in the trailer, you’ll also get to “learn from your favorite professors” with McGonagall from Gryffindor, Sprout from Hufflepuff, Flitwick from Ravenclaw, and Snape from Slytherin. Other familiar faces will include Albus Dumbledore and Rubeus Hagrid with the story reportedly taking place between Harry’s birth and first year. That means we might not see Harry, Ron, and Hermione, but Nymphadora Tonks and Bill Weasley are fair game. Gameplay additionally involves forming friendships, mastering spells, making potions, and unlocking mysteries.

Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery is expected to come out sometime in 2018, although fans can pre-registration now on Google Play.
