What to Expect From Season 2 of Westworld

Unless you’re caught up on the first season of Westworld, keep in mind that this article is one big spoiler.

Following its debut in 2016, Westworld quickly erupted as the most buzz-worthy show on television. Immersing the audience in a fascinating world overrun with mystery, it wasn’t long until Westworld fan theories started to dominate the Internet. Whether your theories were right or wrong, Season 1 had no shortage of jaw-dropping moments. Who could forget when it was revealed that Bernard was actually a host modeled after Westworld’s co-founder, Arnold? That twist was only topped with the revelation that William and the Man in Black were one in the same. The ending in particular left us all eager for Season 2, as Dolores shot Ford in the head, Maeve got one step closer to finding her daughter, and a robot rebellion loomed on the horizon.

For all the questions Season 1 answered, though, the universe Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy have developed is still very much a riddle wrapped in an enigma. Where the first season was appropriately subtitled The Maze, Season 2 will be subtitled The Door. Could this mean that all the answers we’ve been seeking are just a turn of a doorknob away? Seeing how this is Westworld, there’s no way things will be that straightforward. While the creators have done their best not to divulge any major spoilers, there are a few details we can share regarding Season 2.

For starters, most of the key cast members are coming back, including Evan Rachel Wood, Thandie Newton, Jeffrey Wright, Jimmi Simpson, James Marsden, Luke Hemsworth, Shannon Woodward, Tessa Thompson, and Ed Harris. We’ll also be getting more of Peter Abernathy and Angela, as actors Louis Herthum and Talulah Riley have been upgraded to series regulars. One notable omission from the sophomore season’s cast list, however, is Anthony Hopkins. This isn’t surprising considering the fate his character met at the end fo Season 1, although that doesn’t mean Ford is gone for good. One of the most popular theories is that Dolores actually shot the host version of Ford, meaning he could return in a variety of different ways. We smell another Jon Snow.

Aside from the cast members we’ve already come to adore, Season 2 will also add at least six new players. Joining the cast are Fares Fares (Zero Dark Thirty), Betty Gabriel (Get Out), Katja Herbers (The Leftovers), Neil Jackson (Blade: The Series) Gustaf Skarsgard (Vikings), and Jonathan Tucker (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre). Six seems to be the magic number this season, as the website Delos Destinations has also teased a total of six parks we might see one day. In addition to Westworld, this season is also set to introduce Shogun World, which is “modeled after Japan’s Edo period.” This world was also alluded to in the Season 2 trailer, which featured a geisha host.

Speaking of highlights from the trailer, we also got a glimpse of a brand new type of host. Talking to Entertainment Weekly, the creators confirmed that these faceless, white androids are known as drone hosts and will play a key role in a secret project that’s “hidden in plain sight.” This is perhaps the biggest clue as to what we can expect from Season 2. That being said, there’s still a ton left up in the air. Where is Maeve’s daughter? What exactly happened to Abernathy while he was away? Will we ever get to see Medievalworld,  Romanworld, or Futureworld? In any case, one thing is for certain: a new narrative is unfolding.
