Whether they’re original creations or interpretations of famous characters, a few of these malefactors have managed to elevate their respective game to greater heights. Fair warning, there are MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD!

#3: John Doe
“Batman: The Enemy Within” (2017)

He’s arguably one of the greatest villains in all of fiction, one who has had numerous versions published across all mediums, each one highlighing his psychosis from a unique angle. As such, it was going to be a tall order for Telltale to breath new life into the Clown Prince of Crime, yet they somehow managed to make it happen by looking at the man behind the scars…and conveying him as borderline sympathetic? With our choices dictating whether he walks the path of vigilante or villain, it’s fair to say we had never felt so responsible for Batman’s greatest foe. Who knew a crazed murderer could break our hearts?

#2: Bloody Mary
“The Wolf Among Us” (2013)

The Crooked Man may be the one pulling the strings behind the shady dealings in Fabletown, but we can’t bring ourselves to look past his number one henchwoman, mainly because she is just too much fun. A killer who loves her job, her overwhelming strength managed to cut down the Big Bad Wolf with little effort, and that’s even before she unveiled her true form. Sassy as all hell, packing a mean swing and just embracing every bloody conflict, it was almost a shame that Bigby ended up shattering her to pieces. After all, every sheriff needs a mortal enemy to contend with.

#1: The Stranger
“The Walking Dead” (2012)

Lee and Clementine encountered both the worst of humanity as well as countless undead hordes in their fight for survival. While the cannibal family and members of Crawford were certainly disgusting in their own ways, none of them managed to instil as much dread in our hearts as this seemingly random survivor. The build-up to his reveal was masterful, and while he wasn’t as menacing as we would have expected, the truth of why he had been shadowing Lee managed to strike a chord with players, mainly due to how every major decision came full circle all at once. He truly was a monster of our own making.
