Over the past few years, Ava DuVernay has broken out as one of the most influential filmmakers currently working in Hollywood. On the heels of smaller films like Selma and 13th, she brought A Wrinkle in Time to the silver screen, becoming the first African American female director to helm a live-action movie with a $100+ budget. Now DuVernay has signed up to direct New Gods for Warner Bros., marking her second big budget picture in a row.
According to Deadline, DuVernay will also work on the film’s script with co-writer Kario Salem, who won a Primetime Emmy for Don King: Only in America. Based on a comic book series created by the legendary Jack Kirby, New Gods will be an integral part of the DC Extended Universe. This upcoming film was previously teased in a scene from the extended version of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Justice League delved even deeper into the New Gods franchise with the exploration of Steppenwolf and the Mother Boxes.
DuVernay actually hinted at her involvement in New Gods in December 2017. When asked who her favorite superhero was on social media, the director responded, “Big Barda. Many reasons.”

As of now, it’s unclear which characters will appear in New Gods. If DuVernay brings Big Barda into the mix, though, we should also get to see her husband, Mister Miracle. If the film takes place on Apokolips, the villainous Darkseid would also likely play a major part.
DuVernay won’t be the first female director to helm a DC film. Patty Jenkins earned universal success with 2017’s Wonder Woman, which became the biggest DCEU film at the domestic box office, as well as the highest-grossing live-action movie directed by a woman. Will DuVernay also break new ground with New Gods?
