BBC’s adaptation of Philip Pullmanâs His Dark Materials trilogy is starting to come together with an A-list cast and crew. According to Deadline, Oscar-winning director Tom Hooper has signed up for the eight-part television adaptation. Dafne Keen, who stole the show as X-23 in Logan, has also been cast as protagonist Lyra. Lin-Manuel Miranda, the musical mastermind behind Hamilton and Disney’s Moana, is additionally onboard to play Lee Scoresby.

The parallel universe Pullman created on the printed page was previously brought to the silver screen in 2007’s The Golden Compass. The film was praised for its production values and even won an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. However, many fans of Pullman’s work criticized the film for simplifying the source material and virtually removing the religious subtext. The Golden Compass was ultimately a box office flop, killing any hope of seeing The Subtle Knife or The Amber Spyglass get the Hollywood treatment.
Of course since then, people have started to realize that television is the ideal medium for getting lengthy, ambitious stories across. With the success of HBO’s Game of Thrones and Netflix’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, His Dark Materials should feel right at home on the small screen. The talent involved also bodes quite well for the project.

In addition to directing The King’s Speech, Hooper also brought us the acclaimed Les Misérables and The Danish Girl. Miranda is set to star in Mary Poppins Returns and is attached to co-write new songs for Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid. Keen also seems poised to become a major star, being fresh off a Critics’ Choice Movie Award nomination for Best Young Performer.
