Top 10 Forbidden Romances In Anime

The course of true love never did run smooth, especially when it comes to these couples. Whether their affections are considered taboo by society, they’re fighting for opposing causes or just appear to be destined to never be together, these are the lovers that somehow managed to find a way to make it work. For better or worse.

Fair warning, there are MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD!

#10: Haruka and Sora
“Yosuga no Sora” (2010)

Because there’s nothing more wholesome than watching two traumatised siblings find comfort in each other through the medium of coitus…

#9: Takao and Yukari
“The Garden of Words” (2013)

This twist on the student/teacher relationship is handled so delicately and beautifully that it will have you in tears by the end.

#8: Kei and Mizuho
“Please Teacher!” (2002)

An eighteen year old who looks like a fifteen year old enters a physical relationship with his busty teacher, who also happens to be an alien. Seems legit.

#7: Haru and Ren
“Super Lovers” (2016-)

Don’t come here looking for a great example of a yaoi pairing. Instead, bask in the awkwardness of two step-brothers with a massive age difference getting it on.

#6: Saber and Shirou
“Fate/stay night” (2006)

Master and Servant are supposed to be nothing more than pawns doomed to battle in the Holy Grail War. Well, to that these two say screw it, instead choosing to confess their feelings despite knowing deep down that it can never be.

#5: Simon and Nia
“Gurren Lagann” (2007)

In spite of the fact she was destined to disappear from the world following the defeat of the Anti-Spiral, Simon still chose to declare his love by marrying Nia moments before she passed on.

#4: Kamille and Four
“Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam” (1985-86)

Whatever happiness these two might have found was stripped from them when they both became nothing more that instruments of death to be used in the Titan’s ploys.

#3: Kirino and Kyousuke
“Oreimo” (2010-13)

Well, they did it. After a whole season of fighting it, this brother and sister decide to go all the way and get married. Consequences be damned.

#2: Korosensei and Yukimura
“Assassination Classroom” (2015-16)

You might have thought a romance between a research assistance and the world’s deadliest assassin could never have worked out. And that’s even before he was experimented on and ended up growing tentacles. They went on to prove everyone wrong with a relationship that was short as it was genuinely sweet.

#1: Krillin and Android 18
“Dragon Ball Z” (1989-96)

Kudos to Krillin for following his gut. He was willing to risk the world’s safety just for the slightest chance a killer android might have a romantic interest in him. Considering she ended up marrying him, we’d say it was a gamble well spent.
