We’re One Step Closer To A Live-Action Geralt
Medieval fantasy series are certainly all the rage these days, but only a few have managed to elevate themselves to super-stardom. On the big screen you have The Lord of the Rings, television has Game of Thrones, and for video games you…okay, there are a lot of contenders for video games but if we’re forced to choose it would be The Witcher. Specifically The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which many view as a modern masterpiece. With so much success, it’s no wonder that a platform like Netflix was dying to get its hands on the White Wolf.
Granted, many of us are sceptical. The Witcher’s world is so vast and rich with so much lore and so many characters it took us dozens upon dozens of hours to get a grasp of it. Not to mention there’s all that political intrigue and monster hunting, so we hope this show has one hell of a budget behind it.
At the very least, according to an article on Gamesradar, we now know that the showrunner will be one of the writers behind the likes of both Daredevil and The West Wing!
Netflix announced in May that it would be adapting The Witcher into a television series, but we were given surprisingly few details about who was involved. But now, Variety reports that Lauren Schmidt Hissrich will serve as executive producer and showrunner.
Name not ringing any bells? Hissrich was a producer for Daredevil season 2 and The Defenders, working alongside showrunners Douglas Petrie and Marco Ramirez, who oversaw both projects. She was also one of the writers for both shows, as well as a staff writer on The West Wing. Sounds like a pretty good resume for someone charged with adapting a serious take on Polish fantasy to me.
The show still has no release date or cast, but these are the early days and that’s not terribly surprising. It should be noted, however, that when it does arrive, it will be based on the books by Andrzej Sapkowski, not CD Projekt Red’s games.
It’s certainly a step in the right direction, and we’ll reserve all judgement until we start see footage of the legendary monster slayer in action!
