#20: Sophie Turner & Kit Harington
“The Dreadful” (2026)
After nearly a decade on “Game of Thrones,” fans saw this pair as siblings in spirit, and the actors did too. So, it’s easy to see why neither Turner nor Harington was too keen on their kiss scene for this gothic romance. Given the pair play lovers, kissing scenes were non-negotiable. But that didn’t mean they had to like it. Hilariously, the actors even pretended to gag the first time, reflecting what many fans must have felt while watching them. Director Natasha Kermani recalled the two were, appropriately enough, “dreading” the moment. And although they not only kissed but also had additional love scenes, it was an experience both Turner and Harington would rather not revisit.
#19: Jennifer Lawrence & Liam Hemsworth
“The Hunger Games” franchise (2012-15)
Katniss may have found herself embroiled in a love triangle with Peeta and Gale, but turns out neither Josh Hutcherson nor Liam Hemsworth was lining up for a smooch. According to the former, Lawrence’s kissing technique was too “abrasive” for his liking. Meanwhile, Hemsworth wasn’t exactly having the time of his life either. As he told Jimmy Fallon, his scene partner would deliberately eat foul-smelling things like tuna fish or garlic before their scenes. For her part, Lawrence didn’t seem to care about the criticism. On “The Graham Norton Show,” she admitted to eating “mustard and tuna” beforehand, as being close friends with both actors meant she didn’t have to worry about offending either one. Sorry, boys.
#18: Kate Beckinsale & Colin Farrell
“Total Recall” (2012)
Intimate scenes aren’t nearly as passionate as films make them appear. With an entire crew watching, it can be a painstakingly awkward process, even more so when one of the actors happens to be the director’s spouse. This was the conundrum that Colin Farrell found himself in while shooting “Total Recall.” At the time, Kate Beckinsale was married to the film’s director, Len Wiseman. Recalling the experience with Conan O’Brien, Farrell joked that Wiseman “wasn’t kind enough to leave the room” during his scenes with Beckinsale. Of course, Wiseman had already filmed even bolder moments between Beckinsale and Scott Speedman in the “Underworld” movies. Maybe Farrell might have felt a little less self-conscious if someone had told him about that.
#17: Amanda Seyfried & Megan Fox
“Jennifer’s Body” (2009)
Much of the promotional campaign for this horror comedy centered around the steamy scene between its female leads. Although the film didn’t hit big at the box office, the lip-lock scene got the internet buzzing. But it turns out the actresses weren’t quite as excited as their fanbase. In an interview with Variety, Megan Fox admitted she and Amanda Seyfried were “horrified that we had to make out.” The actress said she was a bit more comfortable than her scene partner, who “was not excited” at all. Seyfried seems to have changed her mind over the years, however. In a 2014 interview with “W” magazine, she claimed, “We kissed really well together…If I watch the scene, it’s actually really sexy.”
#16: Rachel McAdams & Ryan Gosling
“The Notebook” (2004)
Many fans consider “The Notebook” among the most iconic romance films ever made. Ironically, its leads couldn’t actually stand each other behind the scenes. As revealed by director Nick Cassavetes to VH1, Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams “had it out” for each other. At one point, Gosling reportedly tried to have McAdams removed from reading opposite him. According to the director, one particular romantic scene led to a screaming match that ultimately required a producer’s intervention. Cassavetes suggested the argument may have led Gosling to respect McAdams for “standing up for her character.” Considering the pair ended up in a real-life romance that lasted over two years, it’s safe to say they had no problems kissing after the cameras stopped rolling.
#15: Leonardo DiCaprio & Kate Winslet
“Revolutionary Road” (2008)
We don’t blame you for being surprised to hear the names of these two “Titanic” co-stars. After all, the pair sizzled up the screen big time in James Cameron’s romantic epic. However, Kate Winslet wasn’t too keen on kissing her long-time friend Leonardo DiCaprio for “Revolutionary Road.” It was even more complicated since the film was directed by her then-husband, Sam Mendes. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actress admitted feeling odd about the whole situation, saying, “I was like, ‘Is it just me who feels a bit weird about this? You know. My friend. My husband.’” According to Winslet, neither man shared the same awkwardness; both were too focused on getting the scene right instead.
#14: Helena Bonham Carter & Woody Allen
“Mighty Aphrodite” (1995)
Receiving notes on acting techniques can be insulting, even from the director. Helena Bonham Carter wasn’t feeling Woody Allen’s process during “Mighty Aphrodite,” describing the latter as “quite monosyllabic.” In an interview with “Elle” Magazine, the actress recounted how mechanical kissing scenes with Allen were during the film. Allen reportedly barely spoke with her unless on camera. Bonham Carter assumed the communication gap was due to Allen having “great trouble talking to women.” The actress even compared kissing Allen to be “like kissing the Berlin Wall,” saying that “it can be a bit offensive because he makes no effort at all.” Honestly, there’s nothing else to say but “Yikes!”
#13: Angelina Jolie & Matt Damon
“The Good Shepherd” (2006)
With mixed reviews and less-than-stellar box office returns, this Robert De Niro-directed spy film hasn’t remained strong in memory. As far as Matt Damon is concerned, he might specifically like to forget kissing scenes with Angelina Jolie. The actors, already long-time friends by the time they were cast in the film, weren’t thrilled at the prospect of locking lips. In an interview with “Reveal” Magazine, Damon confessed how “awkward and generally awful” the experience was, describing it as “like kissing my sister.” Given the weird context of their characters’ dynamic in the story, it likely didn’t make filming any easier for either performer.
#12: Eva Mendes & Will Smith
“Hitch” (2005)
Oddly enough, tuna fish seems to be the preferred meal for many celebs, and it strikes again here. Will Smith and Eva Mendes’ sizzling chemistry lit up screens worldwide, propelling “Hitch” to an incredible $371 million figure at the box office. But as the pair hilariously revealed to Oprah Winfrey, Mendes’s “stank breath special” sandwich made Smith do a “triple-take.” Nervous about shooting the romantic moment, Mendes turned to her preferred comfort food: tuna fish sandwich with onions and Doritos. As expected, the meal hardly left her breath feeling minty fresh. For his part, though, Smith was a good sport about it, insisting that the kiss was “absolutely wonderful” regardless of the unpleasant aroma.
#11: Shailene Woodley & Miles Teller
“The Spectacular Now” (2013)
This coming-of-age drama centers around two young adults in an unlikely romance. Audiences and critics found the chemistry between Woodley and Teller both believable and earnest, although the latter wasn’t much of a fan of their love scenes. On the red carpet for a screening at the Vista Theater, Teller was humorously blunt about how he felt kissing Woodley. The actor was vocal about his disdain for Woodley’s breath from her unique combination of supplements, saying, “It’s like a dirt pouch, and it smells like crap.” Woodley even confronted Teller at the same event for his choice words, though the latter still stuck to his opinion. Who knows? Maybe that’s why the pair transitioned from lovers to enemies for “The Divergent” series a year later.
#10: Sienna Miller & James Franco
“Camille” (2008)
Kissing is normally a painless experience. Unfortunately, Sienna Miller experienced the opposite when she locked lips with James Franco on the set of “Camille”. Onscreen, the duo played a newlywed couple that was going through a bizarre phase of their relationship. But behind-the-scenes, Miller was suffering from an all-too-common toothache. She couldn't kiss Franco without experiencing severe pain. The toothache got so bad that Miller requested a dentist be brought into the production to take a look at her mouth. Despite her dental challenges, all the kissing scenes looked convincing in the final cut of “Camille”. We applaud Miller for making out through the pain.
#9: Reese Witherspoon & Robert Pattinson
“Water for Elephants” (2011)
When Robert Pattinson caught a bad cold during the production of “Water for Elephants”, the cameras kept rolling. This was bad news for his co-star Reese Witherspoon. The script called for them to share a few romantic kisses. But when it came time to film their scenes, Patterson’s nose was still dripping. Witherspoon was somehow able to work around the runny nose during the production. Given the disgusting circumstances, we think she was being kind when she described kissing Pattinson as “not pleasant”. To his credit, he also acknowledged that his cold was terrible and even admitted to wiping his nose on Witherspoon's wig. Maybe he should’ve taken a sick day.
#8: Thandiwe Newton & Tom Cruise
“Mission: Impossible 2” (2000)
If the thought of making out with a coworker in front of a full room of people makes you uncomfortable, then you’ll sympathize with Thandiwe Newton. During the “Mission Impossible: 2” shoot, the actress shared some steamy scenes with co-star Tom Cruise. According to Newton, it was awkward to kiss Cruise while being watched by a bunch of crew members. Newton also described the set as hot, wet, and “slightly icky”. And to top it all off, she also had to kiss in a very technical way, making sure that the scene looked good for the cameras. All those factors combined made it sound like Newton's makeout scenes were impossible to enjoy.
#7: Rupert Grint & Emma Watson
“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows ― Part 2” (2011)
Plenty of Potter fans that will tell you that Ron and Hermione's kiss in the final movie was a long time coming. But the actors behind the characters would have preferred to skip the smooch all together. Rupert Grint and Emma Watson spent a decade playing Ron and Hermione. After working together for so long, they treated each other like family. So when they realized they would have to kiss, Grint and Watson dreaded the experience. Both of them tried to get the scene done in as few takes as possible. Watson and Grint went on to say the experience was like kissing a sibling. We hope all the Ron and Hermione shippers aren’t too disappointed that their actors didn't enjoy their climactic make-out session.
#6: Dane Cook & Kate Hudson
“My Best Friend's Girl” (2008)
During an interview on “Watch What Happens Live”, comedian Dane Cook said that the worst kissing partner he ever had was Kate Hudson. He claimed that every time he made out with his co-star on the set of “My Best Friend's Girl”, her breath smelled like “a feast of onions”. It's been rumored that Hudson intentionally ate the potent vegetables before every romantic take as a prank on the comedian. But whether it was a joke or not, having to repeatedly kiss someone whose breath reeks of onions sounds like a horribly unpleasant experience. This tale of bad breath left us wanting to swallow an entire pack of mints.
#5: Orlando Bloom & Zoe Saldana
“Haven” (2004)
After the indie crime drama “Haven’s” plot was torn apart by critics, the romantic leads of the film criticized the love scenes. Zoe Saldana disliked the numerous people involved to make her intimate scenes look real. She also lamented how sweaty she’d get during the scenes. Orlando’s Bloom’s discomfort stemmed around the presence of his co-star’s significant other. He felt odd making out with Saldana when her boyfriend was nearby. When all was said and done, both Bloom and Saldana said that kissing the other person was “gross”. Based on their stories and the critical lashing this movie received, these co-stars needed a closed set, a generous a/c, and a better script.
#4: Jennifer Lawrence & Bradley Cooper
“Silver Linings Playbook” (2012)
Jennifer Lawrence seems to have bad luck when it comes to locking lips with her co-stars. Josh Hutchinson criticized her rough kissing technique when they shot romantic scenes for “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”. After playing Katniss, For example, Lawrence initially found it hard to make out with Chris Pratt while shooting “Passengers” because he was married at the time. But there was one kiss so problematic that she couldn’t wait to address it. After Bradley Cooper gave her a wet kiss on the set of “Silver Linings Playbook”, Lawrence immediately called him out. Although he might’ve been taken aback by the criticism, her bluntness seemed to improve the scene. The duo ended up winning the MTV Movie Award for Best Kiss in 2013.
#3: Julia Roberts & Nick Nolte
“I Love Trouble” (1994)
“I Love Trouble ”was the name of a 1994 rom-com/crime flick starring Julia Roberts and Nick Nolte. The movie’s title ironically mirrored the working relationship between the two actors. Roberts claims that Nolte’s macho attitude rubbed her the wrong way. His behavior allegedly led to the actress to insult him on set. Their relationship got so bad that the director reportedly had to get other actors to stand in for Nolte and Roberts’s characters to complete certain scenes. Unfortunately for the feuding co-stars, they couldn’t use alternate actors for their kissing scenes. After faking their way through romantic scenes, the two actors continued to have bad blood between them. In later interviews, Nolte said that Roberts was “not a nice person” after she called him ‘disgusting”.
#2: Sean Young & Harrison Ford
“Blade Runner “ (1982)
It's a miracle the kissing scene in “Blade Runner” was shot at all. During the chaotic production of this sci-fi cult classic, constant rewrites, budget issues, and director Ridley Scott's quest for perfection pushed the crew and actors to the edge. The stressful working conditions may have been the reason why Harrison Ford and Sean Young reportedly did not get along. Despite their differences, the actors had to pucker up for a key scene. The actors were so unhappy that certain crew members nicknamed Ford and Young’s kissing scene as “the hate scene”. Fortunately for both actors, their characters didn’t have to make out again in the sequel.
#1: Tobey Maguire & Kirsten Dunst
“Spider-Man” (2002)
Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man” featured one of the most iconic movie kisses of all time. After saving MJ from a group of muggers, the webhead hangs upside down in the rain and makes out with her. Although the scene easily nabbed MTV’s best kiss award, it was a hard scene for Tobey Maguire to shoot. Since he was hanging upside down, rainwater was constantly rushing into his nose. This made the actor feel like he was drowning. As Maguire struggled to breathe out of his mouth, he also had to ignore all the blood rushing into his head. Despite the challenging nature of the scene, the kiss managed to look romantic. Delivering upside-down kisses while ignoring the feeling of drowning must be Maguire’s superpower.
Which of these pairs surprised you the most? Pucker up in the comments.
