#20: The Lorry Crash

The special effects in Corrie back in 1979 weren’t exactly as bombastic as they are in today’s episodes, but nevertheless, this moment has stuck in viewer’s minds for decades. Coronation Street stunned everyone when a runaway lorry ploughed straight into the Rovers Return, causing one of the soap’s earliest major disasters. The impact sent bricks and glass flying through Weatherfield’s most famous pub, trapping terrified residents inside. Deirdre was separated from her young daughter Tracy, who was left alone right in the chaos as emergency services rushed in.

#19: Sarah Platt is teen pregnant

The Platt family has seen its fair share of drama, but few storylines hit as close to home as Sarah-Louise's teenage pregnancy. At just thirteen years old, Sarah discovered she was expecting, sending shockwaves through the street and particularly through her mother, Gail. This powerful storyline explored the challenging realities of young parenthood, the stigma, and the profound impact on a close-knit family. It underscored Coronation Street's courage in tackling sensitive social issues, paving the way for Sarah's complex journey into adulthood and motherhood with Bethany.

#18: Reg's waterbed bursts

Back in the early ‘90s, the rather eccentric Reg Holdsworth showed us all why water beds really should bea thing of the past. In a fumbling attempt to woo Maureen, as part of a long-running love story, he and she ended up on top of his wobbly mattress together – so, what could possibly go wrong? It turns out everything, as the bed inevitably burst after a spot of DIY in the floor below leads to a drill going straight through it. What follows is a lengthy series of embarrassments, as a nearly-naked Reg splashes around in a towel, and Maureen tries desperately to find something to wear!

#17: The Death of Geoff Metcalfe

Geoff has to be one of the nastiest characters to ever step foot on the cobbles. His emotional and physical abuse of partner Yasmeen Nazir had fans praying he would eventually get his comeuppance. Fortunately, he got that in dramatic fashion. After Geoff attempted to set the house ablaze, he ended up chasing Yasmeen onto the roof, a huge error on his behalf. He ended up slipping and, despite Yasmeen’s attempt to save him, falling to his death. After an audible gasp by the British public, viewers rejoiced as this monster was finally done for.

#16: The Hair Mishap

When Vera decided to freshen up her look with a visit to Audrey's salon, she certainly got more than she bargained for. What was supposed to be a subtle update turned into a full-blown purple nightmare when Maria, distracted by her feud with Candice, accidentally used the wrong color on Vera's hair. The revelation scene was pure Corrie gold – Vera's horrified expression upon seeing her vibrant purple locks, followed by her trademark outburst that had viewers in stitches across the nation.

#15: Fred Elliott falls down a sinkhole

"I say, I say, I say," Fred Elliott was a man of distinctive character and even more distinctive speech, known for his butchery and his booming pronouncements. But nothing quite prepared viewers for the day the ground literally opened up beneath him, causing him to tumble into a sinkhole. This bizarre and utterly unexpected incident provided a healthy dose of slapstick comedy, showcasing Corrie's knack for injecting absurdity into everyday life. It remains a hilariously memorable mishap, perfectly encapsulating the show's unique blend of drama and farcical humour.

#14: Kylie Platt's Shocking Death

David Platt has terrible luck when it comes to his romantic history. Accidents, cheating, and so on, he’s suffered through it all. But perhaps the one that had the most profound impact on him was the sudden death of Kylie Platt. The scene of her dying in David’s arms as he screamed in anguish is now burned into the minds of Corrie fans across the globe.

From that moment, we wanted to see Clayton Hibbs face justice for what he did to her.

#13: Gail vs Eileen fight

The feud between Gail Platt and Eileen Grimshaw is the stuff of Corrie legend, a simmering rivalry that has occasionally boiled over into spectacular confrontations. Whether they’re verbally sparring across the street or engaged in a full-blown physical altercation, their long-standing animosity is always pure gold. These explosive clashes perfectly encapsulate the spirited, no-nonsense dynamic of Weatherfield neighbours, delivering countless moments of raw, unadulterated entertainment. It’s a rivalry built on decades of tension, making every showdown utterly captivating.

#12: Les and Cilla's hot tub crash

It shouldn’t take the intervention of a Great Dane and a soggy pizza to tell you that a jacuzzi in a modest terrace isn’t always the best idea, but that’s how it went here. Les and Cilla’s romantic bath was going well until the legendary Schmeichel, the dog and not the Danish goalkeeper, dunked himself in with them after sniffing out their takeaway. The result, as you can imagine, was utter carnage – until the couple and the dog were sent crashing into the lounge below. Hands up if you saw this coming? Nope, us neither.

#11: Pat Phelan's Reign of Terror

Pat Phelan emerged as one of Coronation Street’s most chilling and truly menacing villains, casting a long shadow of fear and manipulation over Weatherfield for years. His meticulously planned crimes included murder, blackmail, and psychological torment, keeping residents and viewers alike constantly on edge. Phelan’s ruthless reign pushed the boundaries of soap villainy, proving that the mundane streets could harbour truly dark figures. His protracted and terrifying storyline carved out a space for him as one of the show's most iconic and deeply hated antagonists.

#10: Ken and Deirdre's Wedding (1981)

The first wedding of Ken Barlow and Deirdre Langton in 1981 was a momentous occasion, marking the genesis of one of Coronation Street's most enduring and complex relationships. It symbolised the beginning of their epic, often tumultuous, journey together, laying the groundwork for decades of drama, passion, and an unbreakable bond. This grand affair was much more than just a ceremony; it was a pivotal moment in Corrie history.

#9: Tracy Barlow Murders Charlie Stubbs (2007)

Like most soaps, Corrie has had its fair share of love rats, Charlie Stubbs being no exception. However, in Tracy McDonald, he clearly picked the wrong person to mess around with. After cheating him out of money for a fake abortion, she struck him a fatal blow to the noggin using a brass ornament, all whilst giving him a lap dance to the song “Whatever” by Oasis. It all unfolds as any classic Corrie caper should. But, the real shock came when she hit him the second time – and all the while when there were kids in the room next door!

#8: Roy and Hayley’s Wedding

Roy and Hayley Cropper were, without a doubt, one of Coronation Street's most beloved and gentle couples, proving that true love knows no bounds. Their journey to the altar was a long and often challenging one, marked by their unique bond and Hayley's groundbreaking story as one of TV’s first transgender characters. Their quiet, heartfelt wedding ceremony was a deeply moving celebration of acceptance, unconditional love, and the quiet dignity that defined their relationship. It stands as a beautiful testament to enduring affection and the power of finding your soulmate.

#7: Blanche at Alcoholics Anonymous Meeting

Blanche Hunt, with her legendary caustic wit and complete lack of a filter, was a master of the comedic one-liner. Never was this more apparent than during her unforgettable appearance at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. Her brutally honest, inappropriate, and hilariously cynical contributions had viewers in stitches, perfectly encapsulating her unique brand of dark humour. This scene is a prime example of Blanche’s ability to steal any moment, providing much-needed comic relief and cementing her status as one of Corrie's most beloved and hilariously candid characters.

#6: Mike Baldwin's Death in Ken Barlow's Arms (2006)

The decades-long rivalry between Ken Barlow and Mike Baldwin was the stuff of soap opera legend, a feud that defined an era of Coronation Street. So, it was incredibly poignant and deeply symbolic when Mike, suffering from Alzheimer's, tragically collapsed on the street and died in the arms of his lifelong adversary. This powerful scene transcended their historical animosity, showing a moment of profound shared humanity and a quiet dignity in death. It was a beautifully acted and emotional farewell to an iconic character, bringing a decades-long saga to a truly unforgettable close.

#5: The Death of Vera Duckworth

The passing of Vera Duckworth was a profoundly emotional moment for Coronation Street, marking the quiet but impactful exit of a true legend. Rather than a dramatic accident, Vera passed away peacefully in her sleep in her armchair, leaving her beloved Jack utterly devastated. The poignant aftermath, particularly Jack's heartbreaking grief and the subsequent ethereal return of Vera's spirit to comfort him when it was eventually his time, elevated this storyline beyond a simple death. It beautifully underscored the enduring love and unique bond between the iconic Duckworths, ensuring Vera’s departure resonated deeply.

#4: Ken, Deirdre, and Mike Baldwin's Love Triangle

Few storylines have captured the nation's imagination quite like the epic love triangle involving Ken Barlow, Deirdre Langton, and Mike Baldwin. Spanning decades, this romantic entanglement defined a generation of Coronation Street and fuelled one of the greatest soap opera feuds ever. The initial scandal of Deirdre's affair with Mike, and Ken's heartbroken discovery, was a monumental viewing event, creating an enduring narrative that viewers passionately debated. It remains a masterful example of Corrie’s ability to craft complex, deeply human relationships that resonate for years.

#3: Richard Hillman's Killing Spree

Richard Hillman arrived on the cobbles as a charming financial advisor, but he soon revealed himself to be a terrifying serial killer, becoming Coronation Street's original "killer in the family." His reign of terror, which saw him murder Maxine Peacock, Duggie Ferguson, and Patricia Hillman, kept viewers on the absolute edge of their seats for years. The storyline culminated in a truly spectacular and chilling climax, as Richard attempted to murder the Platts by driving them all into a canal. He solidified his place as one of the show’s most iconic and utterly terrifying villains, forever changing the landscape of Weatherfield drama.

#2: Deirdre Barlow's False Imprisonment

In a storyline that transcended the realm of television and gripped the entire nation, Deirdre Barlow was wrongly imprisoned for fraud in 1998. The sheer injustice of her plight sparked an unprecedented public outcry, leading to the infamous "Free Deirdre" campaign that saw headlines, fan petitions, and even interventions from real-life political figures, including the Prime Minister himself. This extraordinary moment showcased the profound connection between Coronation Street and its loyal audience, demonstrating how deeply invested viewers become in the lives of their beloved characters.

#1: The Tram Crash Disaster

For its monumental 50th-anniversary celebrations in 2010, Coronation Street delivered arguably its most ambitious and devastating disaster: the tram crash. In a visually spectacular and emotionally harrowing sequence, a tram derailed and plunged from the viaduct, bringing chaos, destruction, and multiple fatalities to the heart of Weatherfield. This blockbuster event combined high-octane special effects with deeply personal, character-driven tragedy, leaving an indelible mark on the street and its residents. It was a watershed moment that proved Corrie could deliver grand-scale drama while retaining its gritty, human core, changing the street forever.
