#10: Jeremy Backflips Out of Fatherhood
It’s a tale as old as time. Two people meet, and nine months later, there’s a new baby. Michelle is certain that her former coworker, Jeremy, is the father of her infant. Jeremy’s obviously not buying her story. He’s in the child’s life, but he charges her babysitting fees. When the DNA results prove he’s not the father, Jeremy does a backflip that looks like it could split his nice pants. Clearly, he’s feeling vindicated. It’s actually a surprisingly clean flip, too. There’s no update on whether or not he’ll keep babysitting. We’re guessing it’s a no.
#9: Mom Lies to Daughter for 25 Years
Jasmine is 25 years old, and she’s not sure if Vincent is her biological father. Jasmine’s mother, Tanya, is outraged. This one is full of drama. Some “Maury” segments are just straight-up salacious, but this one is unexpectedly emotional. Jasmine and Vincent clearly want it to be true. The result is not a happy one. Tanya is elated, while her daughter is devastated. She almost reverts to a child again as her mother and the man she thought was her father try their best to comfort her. It’s not really funny at all. It’s just sad.
#8: Color Blind
There are all sorts of reasons a potential “Maury” guest might deny his children. Maybe the timing is off. Perhaps they’re just in denial. Then there’s the simple reason that they just don’t want to be a father. Marco has a pretty legitimate reason. The audience sees immediately that Lapiffany and Marco’s supposed twins are notably lighter-skinned than either of the parents. Marco accuses the audience of being color blind. When Maury reveals that the twins are not his, Lapiffany runs off-stage, and Marco decides to do a celebratory little dance. Compared to other “You Are Not the Father” dances, it’s one of the more dignified examples.
#7: No Apologies
Amanda and Collin are fighting before he even comes on stage. In the aftermath of their nasty breakup, she met several men who could be the father of her daughter. Yet she’s sure that Collin is the girl’s father. The taunting little dance she does before the results are read is premature. Collin isn’t the guy. He starts flipping across the stage while Amanda flings herself to the ground and starts pounding her fists like a toddler having a tantrum. Maury’s suggestion that she apologize to him just kicks off another round of dramatics backstage.
#6: Gary’s Dance
Lavoria spends most of her segment with Gary trying to shout over him. She can’t shout over the DNA results, though. They just confirm what Gary knows. He is not the father of Lavoria’s baby. At this point, the “You Are Not the Father” dance should have an Emmy category of its own. Like any great art form, creative geniuses have pushed it forward with new techniques and innovations on the form. Gary’s dance is a seminal entry in this storied practice. He has such a sense of ease and control that only a man without an unexpected child can have.
#5: Grandmommie Dearest
Alexis and Nate are a rarity. They both want Alexis’ baby to be his, even though they’re not together anymore. It’s Alexis’ mother, Melissa, who objects. She even dogs her daughter out for cheating on national TV. Nate’s allegation that Melissa is just racist may be true, but unfortunately, it doesn’t mean he’s the father. The DNA results prove he’s not. It’s Melissa who acts a fool, screaming and gloating right in their tearful faces that the man who loves and has stepped up for her grandchild is not the child’s father. Obviously, the priorities are a little out of whack here.
#4: Kim’s Multiple Appearances
Several mothers have come to the show over and over, trying to find their children’s father. Kim was a young mom with two children. Over the years, she tried in vain to find their fathers. Each time, she was devastated. Man after man submitted to a DNA test, and each time, she was let down once again. Kim’s breakdowns often led her backstage, where she began to beat on doors and throw objects, while hyperventilating and tearfully blaming herself. Over time, her story became a long-running saga that might never get its happy ending.
#3: Sholonda’s Multiple Appearances
Maury ran 17 different DNA tests to help Sholonda find the father of her child and was never successful. Each time, the revelation hit her like a ton of bricks. One time, she even dropped out of her chair, taking the piece of furniture with her. Hilariously, Maury made sure the chair was okay before tending to her. Though never successful, Sholonda and her husband put an exclamation point on her “Maury” career when her husband, Tyrell, had a paternity crisis of his own. It turned out he was not the father of Sholonda’s sister’s baby.
#2: Isaac Jumps for It
Isaac promised that when, not if, he was proved not to be this baby’s father, he would act a complete fool for the audience. You can’t say he didn’t call his shot. The audience hated him, and he knew it. The inevitable verdict was handed down. He leapt from the stage at the audience that was previously totally against and put on the show he promised. We expect antics at the “Maury” taping, but this was another thing entirely. His goofy, arrogant, but justified display had the entire studio crowd roaring like it was the Cirque du Soleil.
#1: Andrew’s Dance
Sabrina and Andrew were high school sweethearts. Despite being “5000% sure” that Andrew is the father of her child, Sabrina’s certainty is no match for the bitter honesty of Maury’s DNA testing. When Andrew finds out he is not the father, he launches into one of the smoothest “You Are Not the Father” dances we’ve ever seen. The footage keeps cutting back and forth between Maury consoling an emotional Sabrina backstage and Andrew’s continued celebration for the cheering audience. This is the duality of life, Greek comedy and tragedy, playing out right on the “Maury” set.
