VOICE OVER: JB
Written by Alex Crilly-Mckean

So many waifus, so little time. Welcome to WatchMojo.com and today we are counting down our picks for the top ten best girls in anime 2017.

For this list, we'll be looking at the female anime characters who made their debut this year, and won the hearts of fans everywhere. Please note, we won't be including characters who appeared before 2017 via previous seasons, movies etc. This unfortunately means you won't be seeing the likes of My Hero Academia's Uraraka, KonoSuba's Megumin and Little Witch Academia's Akko.

#10: Nina Drango

“Rage of Bahamut: Virgin Soul” (2017) Her intense strength is only matched by her infectiously positive attitude. With her parentage being a little on the draconic side, Nina was born with superhuman strength and the ability to transform into a fire-breathing dragon. There’s just one little catch. This is triggered whenever she gazes upon the face of a handsome man. Unfortunately for her, there appear to be hunks around every part of the kingdom. Honestly, seeing her break out into a blush will have you smitten before you know it. As long as you don’t mind her more fiery outbursts!

#9: Tanya von Degurechaff

“Saga of Tanya the Evil” (2017) Nothing beats a good villain, especially when they’re the star of the entire series. When said villain just happens to be a young sadistic girl with intense magical powers, that’s just the icing on the cake. While she was originally a normal modern day Japanese man, an abrupt death led to her being reincarnated into the Tanya we all know and fear. Now spending her days as a ruthless soldier bringing terror and death to her enemies, we can’t help but enjoy the chaos that follows Tanya everywhere she goes. However, we will be seeing that face of hers in our nightmares.

#8: Selesia Upitiria

“Re:Creators” (2017) She’s the heroic protagonist of your typical fantasy anime with a noble and innocent heart…only to suddenly find herself abducted from said anime into the real world, where she learns her whole life is fictional. Talk about meta. While adhering to many of the tropes you would expect, this fish out of water still won audiences over with her incredible combat prowess, adorable attitude and the fact she also has a giant mecha. It’s not like she doesn’t have a chance to shine either, given how she ends up clashing with characters from other media in the deadliest display of fanfiction we have ever seen.

#7: Serval

“Kemono Friends” (2017) Some of you may not know what this thing is, but in Japan? You might as well be looking upon the face of God. An anthropomorphic feline and poster girl for the franchise, after making friends with the human Kaban, Serval sets off one a delightful adventure, making plenty of friends along the way while getting into all kinds of crazy CGI adventures. Always upbeat and optimistic, her antics have propelled herself and her animal companions to superstardom in their home country. Guess the savannah is much friendlier place than we expected.

#6: Rindo Kobayashi

“Food Wars” (2015-) Speaking of feisty felines. We weren’t sure what to expect when it came to the Elite Ten, but we sure as hell weren’t counting on a firecracker like Rindo to come along and steal the show. While we have yet to see her cooking prowess on full display, the Second Seat’s insatiable appetite, catlike features and mischievous nature have made her something of a femme fatale that we are all too eager to see strut her stuff. Don’t stare too long boys, chances are she’ll use you as a scratching post if you aren’t careful.

#5: Sistine Fibel

“Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor” (2017) Okay seriously, what is it with 2017 and the level of cuteness?! As a no-nonsense student with dreams of excelling as a student of magic, Sistine is more than a little rigid when it comes to playing by the rules. Of course, this gets turned on its head when the new dashing (and idiotic) substitute teacher Glenn takes over her class. As their philosophies on magic collide, she finds herself begrudgingly starting to have a better understanding of magic as well as herself.

#4: Sagiri Izumi

“Eromanga Sensei” (2017) Ignoring the fact that she’s enamored with Masamune, this lewd-artist managed to win the hearts of otaku in 2017. A drastic change from the author’s previous protagonist, Kirino, Sagiri is cute as a damned button. Despite having some heavy competition in the form of Elf and Muramasa, She’s weird sense of humor and oddly endearing hypocrisy manage to secure her this spot on our list.

#3: Ruler

“Fate/Apocrypha” (2017) Or, as she was known in her previous life, Joan of Arc. Unlike all the other Servants participating in the Grail War, Ruler serves as a guiding hand and mediatory that oversees the battle between the Black and Red Factions. Despite her neutral position, she is nonetheless a noble individual whose dedication to her faith made her a charming character to behold. Honestly, there’s no other character we can think of that – no, no, no we can’t do this! We can’t talk about best girls in Apocrypha without mentioning Rider of Black! We don’t care if he’s actually a guy! Astolfo is best girl!

#2: Kanna Kamui

“Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid” (2017) Okay, NOW we have reached the pinnacle of anime cuteness. While Tohru and Kobayashi’s relationship is all kinds of sweet and Lucoa’s bustier frame has its own gravitational pull by this point, there’s no character that rallied the fandom together more so than this pint-sized dragon. With a love of pranks and food, Kanna will have you “aww-ing” before you know it. Seriously, it’s kind of unbelievable how someone can make eating seem that adorable. Before we reveal our number one pick, here are a few honourable mentions. Maika Sakuranomiya “BLEND-S” (2017) Yoshiko Hanabatake “Aho Girl” (2017) Moriko Morioka “Recovery of an MMO Junkie” (2017)

#1: Yumeko Jabami

“Kakegurui” (2017) Sometimes the only way to fight a system as messed up as this is to just give into the madness! In a school where gambling is literally everything, students thrive and fall through various bets, to the point where the losers enter social servitude. Enter Yumeko, a beautiful and sweet young woman…who happens to be a gambling addict. And when we mean addict, we mean she lives for it! Even if she loses, there’s nothing she enjoys more than raising the stakes and betting it all on chance. She has more than a few screws loose, and we absolutely love her for it.
