#10: Crying for Kimishima

“s-CRY-ed” (2001)

While he’d probably never admit it, Kazuma was only the muscle of their operation. Kimishima was the brains. So, it makes sense why, when an operation goes south and Kimishima draws his last breath, Kazuma completely loses his head. While his work as an Alter was far from a bloodless affair, seeing him swear vengeance and ruthlessly attack HOLY camps is just something else. It’s hard not to feel for him, though. Kimishima lived just long enough to say goodbye, milking the gravitas of the moment to its limit. After a farewell like that, Kazuma’s uncontrollable rage seems pretty justified.

#9: A Father’s Death Is a Son’s Duty

“Mobile Suit Gundam Wing” (1995-96)

In a cruel twist of fate, it’s the pacifist Zayeed Winner who ends up on the wrong side of a Gundam blast. Then, in stark contrast to his father’s ideals, Quatre gets in his own mech to swear vengeance. As tragic as it is to see Zayeed’s dreams dashed in yet another cycle of violence, there is some vindication in seeing Quatre completely cut loose on a Gundam fleet. There may have been a rift between him and his father, but clearly, Quatre still had a lot of pent-up grief to work through. And what better way is there than letting blasters do the talking?

#8: Euphemia’s Last Breath

“Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion” (2006-08)

Normally, Suzaku is the calm voice of reason amidst the ever-growing conflict in Britannia. But, then he walked in on rebel leader Zero shooting the love of his life, Euphemia. That’s enough to make anyone question their morals, and Suzaku is no different. His intense grief gives him a new resolve in life: Kill Zero, or die trying. It’s a shocking declaration coming from Suzaku, but since he’s saying it through a sheet of tears over the corpse of his beloved, it’s clear he’s firm in his conviction. So firm, in fact, that we were actually a little scared for Zero after this.

#7: Honorable Discharge

“Hellsing Ultimate” (2006-12)

Here’s some advice; don’t piss off a vampire. Especially don’t murder one of their closest allies, and then call the corpse a gnat. After all that, Zorin was practically asking for it. Lieutenant Pip may have fallen in the line of duty, but he got one last cigarette, and even asked Seras to take his blood. She was happy to oblige his last request, and it gave her all the power she needed to go on a red-stained, maniacal murder spree through Zorin’s forces. We’d call it terrifying if it didn’t taste so sweet. Fueled by grief, vengeance, and her friend’s blood, Seras honored Lieutenant Pip’s sacrifice.

#6: Cursing the Curses

“Jujutsu Kaisen” (2020-)

There’s always been evil inside of Yuji Itadori. Literally, if you count Sukuna. That didn’t stop Mahito from killing the innocent Junpei right in front of him, though. The pain hits Yuji fast and hard, leaving him with a single, sobering thought: getting even with Mahito. The fight that follows is almost excessively brutal, with more headshots and blood spurts than we can count. You can’t even blame it on Sukuna, either. He refuses to help, meaning this burst of extreme violence is all Yuji’s doing. We can’t say it wasn’t deserved, but still, seeing Yuji snap is far from a pleasant sight.

#5: A Super Transformation

“Dragon Ball Z” (1989-96)

Cell really stepped in it this time. “It” being Android 16’s head. The cyborg spent his last words telling Gohan to unleash the power within him, and Cell’s deathblow proved to be the exact catalyst the Saiyan needed. Gohan’s power-up roar is as blood-curdling as it is iconic. With tears still streaming down his face, he leveled the playing field in a fit of rageful power the likes of which we’d never seen before. The Cell Jr.’s didn’t even have time to panic before they were all reduced to, well, cells. It’s not a very healthy form of anger management, but it sure looks cool.

#4: Danafor Goes Down

“The Seven Deadly Sins” (2014-21)

Find yourself someone who loves you as much as Meliodas loves Liz! Even though he’s cursed to watch her reincarnations die, he still refuses to accept a world without her. So much so that, any time he sees Liz’s lineage pass, he goes absolutely ballistic on whatever’s around him. Even if it’s the entire kingdom of Danafor. We’ve always known Meliodas was powerful, but seeing the happy-go-lucky warrior level an entire city just like that really puts his strength into perspective. And his despair, for that matter. Next time Liz is destined to die, we suggest anyone who values their life stay very, very far away.

#3: Berserk No Jutsu

“Naruto: Shippuden” (2007-17)

Having a front row seat to the murder of your childhood crush is devastating in a way words can’t comprehend. Having a front row seat to your childhood best friend murdering your crush is so far beyond awful, we can’t even begin to understand how Obito must have felt. Luckily, actions speak louder than words, and he paints quite a picture using the blood of the Mist Ninja. At a certain point, it doesn’t even feel like you’re watching a fight at all. It’s just a full-blown massacre. Even amongst all the carnage, though, you can’t help but see this all as one big cry for help.

#2: Eclipsing It All

“Berserk” (1997-98)

It’s no hyperbole to say Guts watched everyone he knows and loves die. During the Eclipse, the Apostles emerged and desecrated every single member of the Band of the Hawk. Well, except for Casca, who suffered an even worse fate. To top it all off, the ambush was orchestrated by none other than Guts’ best friend, the person he sacrificed everything to save, Griffith. So, it’s no surprise to see Guts lose himself here. He’s lost everything else; why not his morals, too? He’s determined to save his comrades, or at the very least, avenge their brutal passing. Guts definitely gives it his all here - if only it meant anything.

#1: Justice for Kite

“Hunter x Hunter” (2011-14)

This is not Gon anymore. Learning what Pitou did to Kite cornered him in rage so all-consuming, he used Nen to age his body decades forward. But, we don’t just mean Gon’s physically changed. No, it’s mainly that this hulking brute is so far removed from the optimistic wannabe Hunter that he may as well be a new character. Kite’s death is a tragedy, and Pitou definitely earned a good thrashing. But, it comes at the cost of Gon’s innocence, which might be the biggest loss here. So, enjoy Pitou’s beatdown - this is probably the only time we’ll ever see Gon like this.
