Is the New OSCARS Category Outstanding Popular Film a STUPID Idea? – The CineFiles Ep. 84

San Diego Comic-Con might have taken the entertainment world by storm last weekend, but one brand new trailer released at the convention caused a tsunami. During a panel at SDCC, Director James Wan and his lead actor Jason Momoa dropped the first trailer to Aquaman, giving comic book fans a more in-depth look of the film. The trailer starts off with Aquman divulging his half-human and half-Atlantean status. He then meets up with fellow-Atlantean Mera, played by Amber Heard, who says that he must reclaim his place as the rightful heir to Atlantis by battling his half-brother, King Orm, who looks to start a war with the surface. We also catch glimpses of Black Manta, who is a major foe of Aquaman’s in the comic books. With stunning CGI, and a compelling story some are comparing to Game of Thrones, DC is hoping the film earns the same type of success its predecessor Wonder Woman achieved.

#2: Robert De Niro to Join Joaquin Phoenix in Joker Movie

If Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker movie is looking to tackle the dark and gritty crime-drama style, this potential casting would be a huge addition to the film. According to The Hollywood Reporter, crime movie icon Robert DeNiro is in negotiations to play alongside Phoenix in the new standalone Joker film. If the casting becomes official, this would mark the first time the Goodfellas actor takes on a comic book movie. According to the report, DeNiro would be playing a television talk show host who would somehow play an important role in the clown prince of crime’s origin. The main plot of the movie is still tightly under wraps, but we do know that it will be an origin story set in Gotham City during the 1980s. While this would mark the legendary actor’s first foray into comic book fare, he’s no stranger to crime films, having starred in the aforementioned Goodfellas, Casino and Heat. Before we get to our final entry, here are a couple new releases: “Hot Summer Nights” (2017) “Mission: Impossible: Fallout” (2018)

#1: Petition to Rehire James Gunn for Guardians of the Galaxy 3 Earns 300,000 Signatures

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy franchise may be chockfull of jokes, but director James Gunn’s old tweets were no laughing matter. Marvel fired James Gunn after tweets from almost 10 years ago resurfaced, detailing graphic and disturbing jokes about rape and pedophilia. Gunn addressed the controversy in a series of tweets, apologizing for his past behavior and insisting that he was not the same person as the one who made the inappropriate jokes. Disney chairman, Alan Horn said that his statements were “indefensible and inconsistent with the studios values.” However, Guardian cast members feel Gunn’s firing was unfair, with Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana and Dave Bautista all defending him on social media. In addition to celebrity support, a petition on change.org to have Disney reinstate Gunn has over 300,000 signatures.
