10 Strangest Unsolved Mysteries in Music History

Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we’re looking at ten of the most infamous mysteries in the world of music that remain unsolved to this day.

Who Killed DJ Scott La Rock

Boogie Down Productions burst onto the scene with the future legend KRS-One at the helm, alongside D-Nice and DJ Scott La Rock. In 1987, La Rock was shot and killed in the Bronx while trying to help resolve a dispute involving his bandmate, D-Nice. After driving over to the South Bronx in an attempt to defuse the situation, their vehicle was hit by gunfire. La Rock was struck in the back of the head and later died in the hospital. Suspects in the case were later acquitted, and the incident remains shrouded in mystery. His death is said to be the first murder of a major hip-hop artist, an unfortunate title for a 25-year-old musician who had so much more to give to his craft.

Who Killed Chalino Sánchez And What Was On The Mysterious Note He Received?

The story of Chalino Sánchez is truly a chilling tale, and one that still has many questions within it that remain unanswered. In 1992, video footage of his final concert shows an eerie moment where someone handed him a folded note. Upon reading, you can see the singer’s expression change. The note is widely believed to be some form of death threat, though its contents remain unverified. After leaving the venue, Sánchez was intercepted by armed men who presented themselves as police and claimed a commander wanted to see him. His body was found hours later near an irrigation canal, blindfolded and bearing gunshot wounds. To this day, we don’t know exactly what happened, whether it was a personal feud, cartel violence, or something else.

Where Did Glenn Miller’s Plane Disappear Over The English Channel?

When it comes to the big band era, Glenn Miller was one of the period’s standout stars. In fact, between 1939 and 1942, Glenn Miller and his Orchestra were the best-selling band in the entire world. Tragically, in 1944, a plane carrying Miller to a show in France disappeared while flying over the English Channel. No wreckage was ever found. Theories range from accidental friendly fire by British bombers to the pilot simply being inexperienced. Miller was officially declared dead the following year, although no evidence of the crash was ever recovered.

What Really Happened To Richey Edwards After He Vanished?

Right at the peak of the Manic Street Preachers’ fame in the 1990s, the band’s guitarist Richey Edwards vanished, leaving behind one of rock’s most infamous mysteries. He was due to fly to the United States when he vanished from his London hotel. He had withdrawn substantial amounts of cash, suggesting he was planning some kind of departure, although his intentions remain unclear. His car was later found abandoned near the Severn Bridge, but no further evidence has ever come to light. His bandmates and family could only speculate on what had actually happened, making this a truly unique unsolved case within the context of modern music history.

Who Ordered The Mysterious Attempt On Bob Marley’s Life?

Despite creating some of the most uplifting music of his time, Bob Marley was the target of what appeared to be a politically motivated assassination attempt in 1976. Seven armed men attacked Marley’s Hope Road home two days before he was scheduled to perform a free concert, shooting Marley, Rita Marley, manager Don Taylor and another associate. Marley was politically neutral on paper, but his influence was clear, and Jamaica was then consumed by violence due to an upcoming election. The identity of the assailants remains unknown. Against all odds, he still performed the show 36 hours later, despite sustaining gunshot wounds to his arm and chest.

Who Really Recorded The Mysterious Northern Soul Classic “Peanut Duck”?

Few songs in the history of music have carried as much mystery around them as the Northern soul classic, “Peanut Duck”. This novelty dance track seems pretty normal on the surface, but what’s strange about it is that nobody actually knows who recorded it. It went unreleased in the 1960s, until a DJ got hold of it in the 80s, putting it out as a bootleg under the name “Marsha Gee”. Although this was the name of a real singer, she was not responsible for performing this track. Despite decades of speculation, everything from the singer herself to the musicians who played on it remains completely unknown.

What Happened To Singer-Songwriter Connie Converse After Vanishing?

As an early example of the singer-songwriter genre in the 1950s, Connie Converse’s talents as a musician are unfortunately overshadowed by the peculiar circumstances surrounding her disappearance. All that can be said for certain is that she had become deeply disillusioned with her career, academic work and personal circumstances, and in 1974, she decided to abruptly vanish. Before disappearing, she wrote farewell-style letters to relatives and friends, apparently announcing plans to start a new life in New York. She packed her belongings into her Volkswagen Beetle and left, never to be seen again. Whether she made it to her destination or not is totally unclear, and we also don’t know whether she witnessed the eventual discovery of her music in her later years.

What Really Happened To Bobby Fuller Before His Death?

Just as the release of the track “I Fought the Law” made him an international success, Bobby Fuller was found dead at the age of 23 under highly mysterious circumstances. The singer was discovered in his mother’s car, reportedly beaten and covered with gasoline. Although the police were initially leaning towards the idea that he had taken his own life, his family rejected this theory, claiming that Fuller was excited by his recent fame. Some have speculated about the involvement of organized crime, industry figures, romance and misadventure, but the truth has never come to light.

Who Killed Peter Ivers?

The murder of musician and television host Peter Ivers is one of the darkest and most disturbing unsolved cases in music, period. Known for his work with “New Wave Theatre”, David Lynch, and his own recording career, Ivers was a well respected artist, despite not being a mainstream star. On March 3, 1983, he was found dead in his apartment, the victim of an attack with a hammer. The investigation was badly compromised almost immediately. Police failed to secure the loft, friends and acquaintances moved through the scene, and crucial evidence was reportedly mishandled. To this day, no suspect has ever been identified, nor has any motive been clearly established.

Where Did Jim Sullivan Disappear In The New Mexico Desert?

The disappearance of singer-songwriter Jim Sullivan is an unfortunate tale, a life and career that was cut short after just two studio albums. Sullivan disappeared in 1975 while travelling from Los Angeles toward Nashville, hoping to revive a stalled music career. After being stopped near Santa Rosa, New Mexico, he stopped into the La Mesa Motel. His Volkswagen was later found abandoned at a local ranch, roughly 26 miles away, with his money, papers, clothes, records and beloved 12-string guitar still inside. No body was ever found, and while there is a range of theories, there is little to no evidence to support any of them.
