10 People Who Exposed Dark Secrets Before Mysteriously Disappearing

Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we’re looking at people who vanished into thin air after coming forward with sensitive information. For this list, we won’t be including any UFO-based disappearances, as they deserve a list of their own.

Lena Chapin

In 1999, Gary McCullough disappeared. It wasn’t until 2003 that his step-daughter, Lena Chapin came forward with information. She had no idea at the time that it would come at the cost of her own safety. The Dent County native moved to his farm in Cassville with her siblings and mom, Sandy, in 1996. There, she claimed to have seen her mother shoot McCullough. After burning his body, she forced Lena to help clean up. Three years after divulging this, she vanished in 2006. Sandy claimed she had run away, but her possessions and son being left behind made it clear that wasn’t true. It would take another six years before a case was officially opened, and since then, no progress has been made.

Lee Bo

Speaking out against injustice perpetrated by governments is a commendable, yet dangerous act. Lee Bo understands this well, as his work with Causeway Bay Books in Hong Kong led to him and his co-workers going missing in 2015. After his colleagues’ disappearances, he gave several interviews to the media. While going on a delivery in December, he was seen being shoved into a vehicle. Later, he called his wife and told her he had to stay in China. It was reported that whispering could be heard in the background. His lack of immigration paperwork made it evident it hadn’t been by choice. He remained in China until March of 2016, and was only released after he promised not to distribute banned books.

Henry Baltimore Jr.

Coming forward against the person who stole from you shouldn’t be something to fear. Unfortunately for Henry Baltimore Jr., it ended up being one of the last known things he ever did. In March of 1973, his apartment was broken into. He was tied to the bed, pistol-whipped, and robbed of his cash and valuable belongings. He went to the authorities, and a suspect – Roy Davis – was taken into custody. Baltimore was set to testify, but he was scared due to Davis allegedly threatening his life. He vanished on May 30th, two days before the arraignment. Davis had been seen at his apartment beforehand, but he wasn’t charged. Henry hasn’t been seen since, and his case is still open to this day.

Oliver Munson

In 1983 he bought a used car, but had no idea that this would seal his fate. After Oliver Munson took his Datsun 240Z home, the seller, Dennis Watson, was investigated by the police. It was found that he had sold stolen cars to several people, Oliver included. He was asked to testify against Watson, to which he seemed reluctant. He went missing on February 16th, 1984, three days before he was set to appear in court. Two weeks later, bloodied receipts in his name were found. DNA testing wasn’t available at the time, meaning it couldn’t be linked to Munson. Watson was later charged and sentenced for auto theft, but he never came clean about whether or not he was involved in the 1984 disappearance.

Mauro De Mauro

He claimed to have information that would shake up Italy forever. He never got a chance to reveal it. Throughout the mid-20th century, Mauro de Mauro worked as a journalist for a left-leaning publication. In 1970, he reopened an investigation he had begun in 1962 on the mysterious passing of Eni president Enrico Mattei. Just when it seemed De Mauro found a detail that would blow the case wide open, he was kidnapped. Despite a widespread search, he was never found. After a member of the mafia claimed he’d been slain, a trial was opened in 2006. The suspect was acquitted due to a lack of evidence. The mystery still lives on today, and it's unclear if we’ll ever get answers to resolve it.

Dzmitry Zavadski

De Mauro wasn't the only journalist to have mysteriously gone missing. Belarus citizen Dzimitry Zavadski had already gotten in trouble with authorities in 1997, after he filmed how easy it was to illegally cross the border into Lithuania and back. His situation was made worse in 2000, while working on a documentary. He reportedly captured footage of Belarusian agents fighting side-by-side with rebel forces. Zavadski was last seen in July of 2000, at the Minsk airport. Shortly afterwards, he was gone. It was later revealed that he had received threatening calls and had been followed prior to his disappearance. He has since been declared dead, and while the perpetrators were convicted, the exact details of his abduction and death have never been released.

William Morgan

When going up against a powerful organization, it may be a good idea to not announce your plans before you put them into action. William Morgan learned that the hard way. Despite having claimed to have been a high-ranking Mason in Canada, he was denied entry into the United States chapter. This enraged him so much that he declared he was going to release a book detailing the intricacies of the Freemasons’ secret ceremonies. This went against one of the core values of the group, which led to him being denounced. If only that’s where his punishment ended. Morgan was targeted by the law at first, and was then taken to Fort Niagara on September 12th, 1826. He was never seen again.

Val Broeksmit

Following his adoptive father’s death in 2014, he came across information that would eventually lead to his own demise. When Val Broeksmit — the son of a senior Deutsche Bank executive — found several confidential documents, he knew he had to take them to the press. After doing so, it was revealed that the Moscow branch had laundered billions. In 2021, after giving the FBI information on Donald Trump’s ties to the institute, Broeksmit vanished. His car was later found running, but he was nowhere to be seen. He was spotted for the first time the following year, but his troubles didn’t end there. He was found deceased in April of 2022. No cause of death was ever declared, leaving his fate a mystery.

Fang Bin

In 2020, the world was shocked with the seemingly sudden onset of COVID-19. It had begun in China, and the government made it seem like they had things under control. Journalist Fang Bin revealed the truth in a series of videos. Each one revealed the reality of the situation, from hospitals overflowing with patients to bodies being removed en masse. His efforts resulted in him being detained, but he refused to stand down. He continued to call out corruption despite the risks, and even pointed out in one of his final videos that his home was surrounded by undercover police. He was arrested in February of 2020, and remained imprisoned for years until he was finally released in 2023.

Ross Alderson

All he ever wanted was to do what’s right. After a career in Australian law enforcement, Ross Alderson moved to Canada and subsequently found work investigating lotteries. He worked his way up to the head of the Anti-Money Laundering department, where he discovered unusual financial activity at River Rock casino. He continued to hand information over to the authorities despite pushback, which led to massive seizures. Despite that, Alderson felt he still wasn’t being listened to. After confirming he would work with the authorities in 2019, he suddenly left the public eye. He wasn’t seen or heard again until 2021, when he resurfaced to testify. It’s hard not to wonder if he disappeared for his own safety…or if someone wanted him out of the way.
