Cherilyn Sarkisian LaPierre was born May 20, 1946 in El Centro, California. She is better known by her stage name Cher, is an Academy Award-winning actress, singer, songwriter, director, author and all-around entertainer. She first came to fame in the recording and performing duo Sonny and Cher. She first met Sonny Bono in 1962 when she was 16 years old, when he was working for Phil Spector at Gold Star Studios in Hollywood. They were soon married and released their first album together in 1965 called Look at Us, and the single “I got you Babe” went to number one overnight.

Onstage she covered up her nervousness by poking fun at her husband and became known as the more outspoken, daring and provocative half of the duo. She also became a trendsetter with her fashion and looks.

By 1968 Sonny and Cher had slowed down as a singing duo and they fixed that by starring in a television show called the Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour. Cher also began advancing her solo career with multiple album releases throughout the decade. In the 80’s she began acting more seriously and began starring in numerous Hollywood movies. She was rewarded with an Oscar for Best Actress for her performance in Moonstruck.  Her music career was also revived with the album Heart of Stone which spawned numerous hits.

She has continued her lifelong reinvention throughout the 90’s and into the new millennium with more hit songs and successful tours.
