Mildred Ella "Babe" Didrikson Zaharias was born on June 26, 1911 in Port Arthur, Texas. She was an American athlete that excelled in many sports most notably in golf and athletics. 

She got her nickname “Babe” after Babe Ruth because she once hit 5 home runs in a baseball game. Initially a basketball player, she led her team to the Amateur Athletic Unions Basketball championship in 1931, she soon found that she could excel more in athletics. She entered 8 events in the 1932 AAU championships and won 5 events and set 5 world records. She qualified for the ’32 Olympics and was limited to entering only 3 events, and nearly won them all coming second in one and winning the rest. 

By 1935 she had become an excellent golfer, and would become most famous for her exploits in the sport of Golf. In 1938 she was the first woman to ever compete in a mens PGA event. She turned pro in the year 1947 and went on to dominate the WPGA and then later the LPGA (which she helped found). Her best year was 1950 where she won the Grand Slam of the 3 womens majors, and finished first on the money list. 

She is best remembered for redefining the rules of what it meant to be a female athlete. 

She died on September 27, 1956 from cancer.
