] HipMojo.com » Open Letter to Rocketboom.com’s Andrew Baron and Amanda Congdon

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, Simon and Garfunkel, John Tesh and Mary Hart, Uday and Qusay, Wham!, Regis and Kathy Lee, Czechoslovakia, Rocketboom.com…

Why must all good things that come in pairs come to an end?  All right, so we’re not convinced yet that all of those things were good, but one thing that sure was great was the now-defunct partnership of Rocketboom.com’s Andrew Baron and Amanda Congdon.

I must say, I was never a regular Rocketboom.com viewer.  I first heard about the site in a Business Week article and was amazed with how much they accomplished in such little time, and with so little resources.  In fact, over the months, as I kept an eye out on their growth, development and saw what they were doing integrating video with the Web, I realized that the time was right to launch WatchMojo.com.  Mind you, with all due respect in the world to Rocketboom.com, we wanted to include fake news on WatchMojo.com but ultimately create and launch something far more complete.

Yesterday, Ms. Congdon - the perky, intelligent and witty anchor of the vlog - announced that she was parting ways with Rocketboom.com’s founder Andrew Baron to seek greener pastures.

She says she was fired, he says she left for Hollywood.  Obviously, details of the split remain murky, but since she was 49% owner of the venture (in addition to the $50 per episode fee, which grew over time), it would be fair to guesstimate that money was but one issue in the decision, whoever’s decision it was.

Sometimes the grass isn’t greener on the side, so maybe she has yet to determine what her next move will be.  If that is the case, then I thought to myself yesterday, why not contact her and see if there was some way for WatchMojo.com to work with her in the future.  After all, we are looking for an LA correspondent.  What do you say Amanda?

Assuming yesterday’s news was not all a media hoax or a publicity stunt, and assuming she has yet to accept a mammoth deal from a media company, here’s our message to you: you have green light and carte blanche to use the WatchMojo.com canvas to paint anything you’d like on it.  Or, you can cut a piece of the cloth and do what you would like with it.

And then I realized, why stop there?  After all, between Ms. Congdon’s execution and Mr. Baron’s planning - and not knowing what the details of the split were - why shouldn’t WatchMojo.com make an offer and extend an olive branch to both sides?

There’s always a way to make everyone happy and make all parties walk away a winner.  So this way, maybe Ms. Congdon can find and get what she wants, and Mr. Baron can go on to make Rocketboom.com grow and become even better without Ms. Congdon… if that is possible.

I’ve sent emails to both, we even had some fun with the offer here, but in case they do not get it, here goes nothing:

- Ms. Congdon: I heard that you are heading out West to LA.  So assuming WatchMojo.com need not match a whoppingly large offer from a third party and/or you are not contractually barred from working with us, we offer you pretty much what you would like to become our LA correspondent, and obviously, potentially more.  You’d have carte-blanche on any programming topic, green light on any initiative, just don’t bankrupt us in the process, please.  Since we do not know why you left, then tell us what you want and we’ll see what we can do.  And if you are headed to Hollywood to act in movies, well then it must be your lucky day cause WatchMojo.com is on the verge of starting production of films very soon.

- Mr. Baron: I can only imagine that you are scrambling trying to find a replacement for Ms. Congdon, though of course, no one can replace her, per se.  So, if you are looking for a potential partner to make Rocketboom.com better than ever, well, let’s talk.  We have a lot to offer, especially in the categories that matter most.

My offer stands to both you folks.

I know, pretty crazy… but so is this

[…] Well, here I am in my own world offering Rocketboom’s Amanda Congdon an opportunity to join a rapidly growing company and essentially do anything she wants therein, including setting up our Los Angeles office.  I know this is a long shot, but stranger things have happened, like me, a laymen, roundily beating not one, but two of Rupert Murdoch’s expensive lawyers… […]
