He then teamed up with Rick Rubin to release the kind of music that was being ignored by larger labels, and Def Jam Recordings was born. This became the cornerstone of Simmons’ media empire, Rush Communications. Simmons then actively promoted his artists and built a name for them and a brand for himself.
