Pirates, Privateers and Freebooters oh my!

in: hosted by Veronica Delfino

Pirates, Privateers and Freebooters oh my! Pirates are in the news these days for their clashes with NATO ships off the coast of Somalia, dodging warning shots from heavy-calibre machine-guns. But from the 16th to 18th centuries, pirates and privateers plied the waters of the Caribbean and the eastern seaboard of North America, raiding settlements and looking for treasure-laden ships. In this video learn that while pirates were outlaws, privateers were hired by governments to attack enemy ships in the colonies because their regular navies were engaged in European battles. This pirate exhibit managed to bring together some spectacular pieces to tell its story, including two ship figureheads, one from the 17th century and the other from the 18th century.
